More Villagers Die from Dog Meat Served at Funeral
The number of people who have died after eating meat from a dog that had been poisoned in a village in Kratie province’s Snoul district has risen to five, and the number of people who required medical treatment after eating the meat has risen to almost 40, officials said yesterday.
Snoul district governor Kong Kimny said he had ordered district and commune police, as well as health officials, to use a megaphone to announce to all residents of Snoul Wat Kert village that they must go to their health center or the district hospital for a checkup if they ate meat from the dog.
The meat, along with rice wine, was served at a funeral on Sunday for the first man to die after eating meat from the poisoned dog.
Chea Reth, 76, died on Sunday after eating dog meat that he had bought for 35,000 riel. Earlier reports by district police that Mr. Reth had found a dead dog and cooked it were false, district officials said. They confirmed that the elderly man had bought the dog meat from another resident of the village and said he had paid 35,000 riel (about $9) for it.
The dog meat that he had cooked was was served, along with rice wine, at a funeral ceremony for him later that day. Two women – Bin Laikeng, 57 and Breung Sarorn, 35 – who ate meat at the ceremony died on Monday morning. That night two men who had eaten the poisoned meat – Lin Chheang, 65, and Im Serei Buth, 41 – also died: one at his home and the other at the district hospital, Mr. Kimny said.

Any animal that has dropped dead (rather than been slaughtered) should not be eaten, it could have disease or be poisoned.prahkeitouj wrote:Yes, they are lovely. Don't eat them even they die.Popeye wrote:Dogs are not good for eating, they are only good for " barking and shitting in your garden "

Tainted dog meat kills two more Kratie men
Two more deaths and several more casualties were reported yesterday stemming from the same case of poisoned dog meat that already killed three and caused serious illness in more than 30 people in Kratie province.
The tainted carcass was first eaten by 76-year-old Chea Reth, who found it on Sunday morning and died the same evening. Unaware of the cause of death, dozens more locals consumed the meat at his funeral on Monday, leading to two more deaths and dozens of hospitalisations.

Missus just translated thos for me from a news report on SEATV....
Then authorities, in order to determine whether the deaths were caused by the dog meat, fed the suspected dog meat to a puppy...the puppy died, therefore confirming that the deaths were caused by the dog meat.

Apart from this incident an interest comment from an owner of 999 dog meat resto:
"What, are you really worried about the lives of dogs?" she asked provocatively, nodding toward the grill, her own pet canine—called Tor, or "Lion"—relaxing beneath it. "If you are worried about the lives of dogs, maybe you should think about that every time you go to the market to buy pork or beef."

Minister encourages food, drink safety following deaths
Minister of Health Mam Bunheng yesterday asked the public to stop drinking rice wine and eating sick animals after 19 people died and 170 fell ill in Kratie province over the past month.
Improperly fermented booze can contain methyl alcohol or methanol, which is harmful to humans, according to the Health Ministry. Likewise, animals that died in an uncertain fashion are likely to be contaminated by disease or poison, like the tainted dog meat that killed six people in Kratie last week.
“If people keep drinking rice wine and eating [tainted] dead animal meat, they will get sick or die,” Bunheng said.

PM tells citizens to use extra caution with food
Prime Minister HE urged citizens to be extra careful about sources of food yesterday, following a spate of deaths in Kratie province from poisoned dog meat and adulterated wine that have claimed 21 lives and left 190 in hospital.
“Only the people themselves can save their own lives,” he told an audience on Diamond Island. “Please pay more attention to your own safety”.
The premier went on to acknowledge that authorities are responsible for inspecting food in markets, but insisted they could not inspect food in people’s homes.
However, HE made no mention of a long-awaited food safety law, in the works since 2004, intended to replace piecemeal regulation which sees six ministries overlooking different aspects of food safety.

Re: 3 People Died and 30 Other Hospitalized After Eating Dog Meat
I'm with Digger, tho not about size. Just WHAT kind of poison is SO powerful and lethal that it would poison the dog to such an extent that it became so lethal that even small portions would go on to kill 6 people? I'm thinking the poisoner coulda used a LOT less of it to do the dog in. Might be the SOB was an all night barker. I know I've thought of at least having a slingshot (wrist rocket type, no foolin around when I get woke up) to reply to those constant barkers.
My question is did anyone LEARN from this event? By now they've probably forgotten all about it. Gotta wonder if the poisoner has an enduring level of remorse.
This event does cause a number of questions. I wonder if the dead were big liver fans?
