Pedestrianizing Phnom Penh Riverside

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I haven't seen any detailed plans of how it will link up with the existing roads.

Can you confirm that streets 13 and Sisowath quay remain active all the time, and the only north/south streets affected are 5 and 3?
My understanding is that the street 13 and Sisowath quay both are closed from traffic as well. But I'm not sure about it. I have only seen these two maps and couple news article about this so the details are not completely clear.

As I mentioned earlier, they are building a huge bridge between 106 and 108 so I don't expect that parking lot will be around long.

https://cambodianess.com/article/south- ... n-date-set
Is the night market going to be lost to the on/off ramp of the bridge reaching ground level, or will it be elevated for a distance allowing for the survival of the market, and perhaps even some under-ramp car parking?

There is a very long run of about 1km between the night market and Monivong.

Image
The original plan positioned the ramps on streets 110 and 108, beginning just before the Night Market, right at the sides of the new parking lot. Therefore, I believe the construction of the new bridge does not affect the new parking lot.

From the article:
The bridge will be in two sections across the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers, with one section going from the Night Market Park to the Chroy Changvar peninsula and the other to the Arey Ksat area.
It's going to be a huge bridge, there is no way a ramp would fit on street 110.

I can see the closure of 3 and 5 being easy to work around, and the east/west streets being closed off for those 2 blocks a good thing for the neighbourhood. But to block north/south access on SQ and 13 will send streets 15, 19 and Norodom into a tailspin.

Interesting times...

St 19 is already gridlocked twice a day even when cars are not double parked 😀
but the bridge post and the pedestrian post are contradictory - st 110 is only two lanes - how can it be on-ramp to such a big bridge and connect to Monivong?
Also what about the rumors of girlie bar district moving south of St 51 - does that dovetail into the two proposals mentioned or is just a rumor?

Finally someone asks the really impotant question. I would have thought they are very much part of the new plan for the riverside "entertainment" area. ATM they probably constitute 90% of the revenue from entertainment in the central area.

If you look on google earth, they filmed PP about 10 years ago. The riverside street had a much more pedestrian-friendly feel with tables and chairs on the sidewalk. Now the sidewalk is basically a parking lot, as it already was (and still is) in all of the rest of the area subject to the new plan. I think they are going to need to build up all of the sidewalks like they did in Siem Reap center, and disabuse the occupants of the notion that they own the sidewalks, or only use them for tables and chairs - you know like they do in 99% of cities in the world.

BTW, ask any Khmer what they think of the idea that people from outside of the area will happily park their car in a lot and walk 100 meters or so to their restaurant. Stand well back if they are eating at the time.

Yes, this was what I meant when I commented "What about parking?" earlier. If they can't park directly outside on the road or pavement they won't go to the place.

The khmers are incredibly lazy to walk anywhere. One thing that pisses me off is they take their vehicles into Ouressy market and clog it up completely, just to buy fruit. So lazy.

It is also a need to show off their expensive vehicle.
As I said in an earlier thread about KNY:

Wealthy Khmer loved New Year in PP. They didn't go to Wat Phnom because they needed tp cruise around in their new Ford Raptors armed with 100 liter water tanks and the very latest in powerful water guns and eye protection. The plebs three to a moto with cheap guns that they had to stop to refill didn't stand a chance. Literally every other car on Riverside was an expensive pickiup.
