Cambodians still need to learn that it is not the diploma that gives you intelligence, it's the hard work and study that give you the skills. If you buy an exam, then you are not more intelligent than before.

From the wording of the Khmer Times article, it sounds like only one student in the country got straight A's.

Mr Chuon Naron noted that one exceptional student from Beltei International School managed to score straight A’s.

32 other BELTEI students got overall A grade. There were only 290 in the whole country and 135 in Phnom Penh.

Now go count the unskilled workers in factories and on the fields, and relate them to the amount of self made millionaires and do the math.

While the knowledge you learn in school might be of no use at all (or at least seems to be of no use at all) the fact you absorb that knowledge, structure it, relate it to other knowledge, etc etc, creates structures in your brain you will use the rest of your life.

In a country where a gas guzzling Lexus RX-series with an age of 12 years and 150.000 miles on the clock is considered higher value than a new Toyota Avanza.
In a country where people will buy a car before they build a house.
In a country where people believe loans are cheaper than in the USA because they only pay 1% instead of 3-4% over there.

Explaining anything that's beyond their expectations/experiences is pretty tough. :stir:

I can agree with your second part,, however your first statement,,,

goes to prove my point ,,, most people are too lazy and too unorganized in their life to make their life better and end up as just another cog in the wheel.

Mrs Stroppy and I are delighted that the enterprise team members who sat their Year 12 all passed - not stunningly, but they passed.

When looking at University options for them, we found that almost all Cambodian universities require a Year 12 certificate as an entrance requirement - BUT THE STUDENT DIDN'T HAVE TO PASS! Most of the uni web pages actually state "pass or fail grade not important" or some variation.

One of our young ladies showed us the English content they were expected to learn and regurgitate for that course - and it's absolute rubbish. Even the CELTA crew could identify the errors in vocabulary and grammar! I may yet upload a few scans as examples, but the content is truly horrendous. We now understand why Khmer friends who studied English at school/university speak English in the peculiar way they do.

Well done. Wife's niece #234 failed largely , though her own laziness, and her parent's lack of interest in getting her an education.

Correct, but they don't get straight into the bachelor program. This is commonly used for the many adults who didn't complete grade 4, let alone grade 12, and are not able to go back to high school as an adult.

Instead they do a year at university focusing on the core final year high school subjects, sit the exam again. If they pass they can enter their bachelor program. If they fail again they will need to do a second pre-bachelor year, and can then continue on to the 4 year bachelor of "look I'm a manager" whether they pass or fail afaik.
