Owner of Fat Cat Bar in Kampot (Yan Demyanov) Arrested For Drug Dealing After Police Raid Yields a Lot of Marijuana

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Haha, I think when you're facing the foreseeable future in Prey Sar Prison, stuck in a room with 30+ sweaty, stinky, malnutritioned inmates, you get really resourceful.

A few phone calls to friends and family members explaining the situation and promising on your mother's life that you'll pay them back probably yields some amazing results.

Hell, have we forgotten to Google to see if he started a GoFundMe account? Those things are a game-changer.

But generally speaking, it's really not good practice to publicly announce that you are paying bribes to corrupt official to get out of a crime. That's inviting about four more kinds of potentially even more serious trouble.
I doubt he's announced anything. My info comes from the other side.

The police are crowing about getting $5,000 from him? I don't find that to be very credible.

Why? Because you can't find it through an internet search? If you frequent some venues run by them (ahem ktvs) and frequented by people who work for them, you'll hear about a lot of things that don't make it to the girlie bar stools.
The cops often publicize donations made to them and judges, just indirectly.

What do you think happened? Yan Demyanov convinced the cops it was just a bunch of oregano, shook their hands and walked out?

could be $5000 or $1000 ,the guy might have said more to play the victim card. The official fine is much less for that amount.

I don't know the guy arrested nor anybody that hangs out there. But when the big boss shows up and they bring out the fleet of new trucks, one grand isn't gonna smooth it over! And they're good at maximizing their profit! If you know they've been quietly keeping an eye out, and you look at how and what was release to the media, it was pretty much setup to extract as much as they could, hence 5G.

Not sure. If Raybull is based in Sihanoukville, which I think he has said, I find it hard to believe that would immediately know that money was paid and how much, unless a Kampot police officer received $5,000 and immediately called Raybull to tell him about it.'

If his source isn't the police official who got the money, but someone who knows someone who knows someone who heard something about it, then it's merely a rumor. It certainly could be true, but I tend to doubt it simply because I know it's hard for people to come up with $5,000 in cash a day. I doubt the police take a check or a Diner's Club card.

I have known the police to hold someone's passport until they pay, so maybe something like that happened.

Maybe Yan will be kind enough to make a public statement and clear things up. :thumb:

You can get a new passport at the embassy for $100, it's not a great way to secure a $5,000 debt.

I will back off my earlier statement a bit now that I see he had 48 hours, not 24. I guess it's possible he could have raised that much in such a short time and paid them off, but I still don't believe it's likely.

On the other hand, the idea that the police investigated the bar for six weeks, and then arrested 7 people, and charged two that they determined were selling, and that they were tried and convicted and released with suspended sentences in 48 hours just because the Cambodian justice system is so swift and merciful, and not because of bribery, well that seems quite hard to believe too.
