Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

As far as upsetting the majority, here n the sticks the news has, so far, been greeted with total indifference. :hattip:
Do you live in one of the poor MFI villages? If you do,, I think you may in for a nasty surprise. Otherwise your outlining sounds accurate enough, but knowing HE a bit better in these last moves, I expect he has even more up his sleeve.

Why would he need so long to find a conviction? I'd say he could do it two or three days.
He may have been diagnosed with some terminal illness, and as he sees it, it's now or never for the Hun dynasty.
I live in an old, well established village in what was once "Ta Mok country", have weathered several Cambodian elections without any nasty suprises. HE is never predictable, and there will no doubt be many more twists and turns to come. I wouldn't under estimate the role of several others, such as Sar Kheng and Tea Banh in what transpires. :hattip:
With respect, this is the first time since you've been here that there has been overwhelming support against the government. The CNRP obviously had it in the bag this time. Remember that private census of what the people thought that HE had done recently?
See crook!!!

I'm interested in what ways the CPP think he was trying to "harm" Cambodia? By winning an election? By trying to win an election, thus causing "civil unrest" by changing the status quo? The big man has been slipping for years now...

That's an interesting point. What would happen if the opposition would be voted in next year? I'm quite skeptical that Cambodia would instantly benefit from it, it could become much worse before getting better again. The CNRP doesn't come over as having the skills and experience to lead a country. The CPP is at least having the experience.

Having said that, the way the ruling party is marketing their 'cases' is absolutely retarded and an insult to every observer with half a brain. Accusing KS of conspiring in secret, while using evidence from a public gathering. Ignoring his immunity, this time not based on misinterpreting "red-handedness", but inventing an "on-the-spot-crime" or whatever bullshit was said.

Why don't they just abolish the constitution and turn to one-party rule? Still too dependant on non-Chinese relations? Or is it just too un-Cambodian to actually do what you said you will do?!

That's a point which is often touted, but eats be honest: no one else has really been given the chance to govern, have they? It's like saying X isn't suitable to replace your current incompetent mechanic because he doesn't have as much experience... As some point you might as well try someone else if you keep having problems. I'd be curious to know if John Bingham's unwavering support of the Dear Leader is starting to slip after all the recent events.

I certainly don't like the opposition much at all, but I've seen forests totally decimated for the benefit of the few. The strides which have been accomplished are great and are often mentioned, but would any party have done much better or worse? When you're starting from nothing, it's pretty easy to point at "accomplishments" (usually paid for by others), conveniently neglecting to mention that much greater accomplishments could have been made under different leadership that had 80% of the corruption. It's one of those historical "what ifs" which are impossible to measure. Either way, I'm a firm believer that corruption and nepotism is part of the national psyche, so nothing will change, but that's an entirely different issue altogether.

This is one of the exact issues behind colonialism vs. anti-colonialism.

I rather suspect he is exercising discretion in his silence here.

Pretty sure 95% of opposition leaders around the world have no experience in power either, does not stop people choosing them though.

Maybe they wouldn't benefit but at least it would show a willingness for change. I feel that there is a huge % of the population that are not happy with the status quo and will vote for change at the next election. Whether it works out for the best or not is impossible to predict. But isn't that true (granted to a lesser extent) in every democratic country

I just hope there is still a party in place by the next election.

Absolutely true (Ranariddh's short stint did not instill optimism), and I hope it is clear that I kind of play the devil's advocate here. I just think that in the end it is up to the Cambodians to initiate change - through formal (election) or informal (revolution) means. If there is not enough momentum, for whatever reason, pushing from outside can be devastating.

I meant the whole party apparatus, which in "truly" democratic countries (Europe, N. America) is definitely experienced enough. Besides that, Cambodia is not and has never been a democratic country. It is totally alien to the local culture which is extremely hierarchic. Democracy was the stick they had to jump over in 1993 because they were to weak to argue.
