Unresolved killing casts a shadow over Cambodia
12 July 2018

“We started it together with him and now the ideas are still with us,” said Yeng Vireak on the two-year anniversary of the assassination of Cambodian political analyst and pro-democracy activist Kem Ley. “He is still with us. We walk together all the time.”

Ley, a prominent radio personality known for his stinging critiques of Prime Minister HE’s government, was gunned down in broad daylight at a gas station convenience store in the morning of July 10, 2016.

Kem Ley’s killer sentenced to life
The Supreme Court on Friday upheld a lower court decision to sentence Oeuth Ang to life imprisonment after he was convicted of murdering a prominent political analyst Kem Ley in 2016.

Oeuth Ang, also known as Chuob Samlab, was found guilty of premeditated murder and was sentenced to life in prison in March last year after pleading guilty to gunning down Mr Ley on July 10, 2016.

Presiding judge for the Supreme Court, Soeng Panhavuth read out the verdict after Oeuth Ang had requested a reduction on his life sentence.

“The Supreme Court has rejected the request of Oeuth Ang and upholds the verdict of the Court of Appeal which had made the correct decision,” Mr. Panhavuth said.

Three years ago on 10 July 2016, Kem Ley, a noted Cambodian political commenter and analyst was gunned down while drinking a coffee in a Phnom Penh service station. He was known as an honest man who was not afraid to criticize the authorities.
There will be a memorial held in his honor this year by his family and fellow activists on the third anniversary of his death. RIP.

A noted political commenter and analyst? Jeez, have any of these hacks ever read his analyses?

Well, if HE says so...
In response to [Kem Ley's wife] Ms Rachana’s protests, Mr HE said he was still investigating her husband’s death.

“Ms Bou is wrong in seeing me as her enemy […] seriously wrong,” Mr HE said. “Why do you accuse me of killing Kem Ley? On the contrary, I respected him as a political analyst.

Well, he was inside, but tragic none the less. It would be interesting to put a bug in the patsy's cell and listen in when he talks about his case to his cell mates on those long, lonely prison nights.

Cambodian police arrest 7 marking death of government critic
[Associated Press]
Associated Press•July 10, 2019

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Seven people in Cambodia have been detained in connection with activities marking the third anniversary of the killing of a prominent government critic, police said Wednesday.

Political analyst Kem Ley was shot dead at a convenience store in the capital, Phnom Penh, on July 10, 2016. The killing took place shortly after he spoke on radio about a report alleging that long-serving Prime Minister HE's family had taken advantage of its connections for financial gain.

Several dozen people including Buddhist monks tried to hold a ceremony Wednesday at the site of the killing but were blocked by police.

General Chhay Kim Khouen, the National Police spokesman, said three people were arrested Wednesday for handing out leaflets at the site and four others were arrested Tuesday for printing T-shirts with provocative wording.

"They printed T-shirts bearing words that incite the public, which can lead to social unrest," Chhay Kim Khouen said. "They also organized a religious ceremony without permission and distributed leaflets illegally to make the people upset with the government."

He said the T-shirts featured a picture of Kem Ley on the front and a message the government deemed offensive on the back.

Chhay Kim Khouen said the seven are being detained while they are questioned by police but he declined to answer whether they would be released or formally charged by a court.

In late May, the Supreme Court upheld a life prison sentence for Oeut Ang, who was convicted of murdering Kem Ley.

Oeut Ang claimed he shot Kem Ley over an alleged loan he failed to pay back. However, it was widely speculated that the killing was politically motivated because of Kem Ley's commentaries about HE.

Tens of thousands of people joined Kem Ley's funeral in protest of HE's authoritarian rule, which hardened after the killing, with the closure of independent media and a court decision that dissolved the only credible opposition party ahead of a 2018 general election.
