Will we potentially be having a rematch over Preah Vihear? After all, it was probably one of those generals making the money off of the deforestation.
Cambodia has asked Thailand to remove barbed wire from the area near the disputed Preah Vihear Temple, a senior government official said Monday.

Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, told Kyodo News the Cambodian army sent a letter to the Thai side May 29 asking the Thais to remove 150 meters of barbed wire erected a day earlier in front of the temple.

He said the Thai army had erected the barbed wire just days after the Thai military overthrew the Thai government.

Or perhaps it is only a very convenient ways to call the nationalistic feeling of every Thai. Defending the national territory who could be against that ? Good PR operation

True story during the last period of tension I spoke with university level educated Thai people who were genuinely afraid for the security of Thailand. Not yet the level of the American afraid of third world country under embargo for 10 years (Irak) but close to it.

For the origin of the conflict I head an explanation from a "credible" source.

The Thai mafia a casino on the border near the temple ( Cambodian territory). They want to keep the casino in place, the Cambodian wants to kick them out and control the casino (Thai customer).
This stretch of territory is easy to access from the Thai side but isolated from the Cambodian side, which explained why the location was chosen.
The Thai mafia is paying the military for making all the noise and assuring that they can keep the casino running.
So the military do not want to annexe the territory, if it become Thai territory the Casino could not stay in place.

Not sure about the validity of such an explanation, any input ?

Sounds reasonable... and given the current climate of the military running the show, not much could be done about it from Cambodia's side. I say the 2 involved parties both bet everything on black, and if it hits green they rip it down and replace it with a car wash.

most casinos are owned and operated, ( Cambodia, Burma, Laos) by ex army or current army/businessmen. Not thai mafia

was at Preah Vihear an have not noticed any casino there.

Given that the casinos are huge employers of Cambodians, Not to mention the tax and rent the casinos pay, i seriously doubt they would want to kick any out
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

not if they're anything like the ones in bavet... nearly 100% vietnamese staff. most didn't even speak khmer. even the security guards and such, not just the dealers.

not just the casino's. went to 2 different restaurants while we were there and it was the same story. makes one wonder a little about those "X vietnamese living in cambodia" debates if that's the situation at all of the border casinos... while they're not really full time living here, they may have a shared room/etc and be living here most of the time for work.

Isn't that the most organized and dangerous mafia? Ex-military with real training, organization, and means? They make the best mafia men, but often have better opportunities to take.

by the military itself, or members of it? in the US most ranking military persons own a side business as well.
