It could have been a result of insulin shock from diabetes. The diagnosis was hypoglycemia :
If left untreated, hypoglycemia may lead to a seizure or unconsciousness (passing out, a coma). In this case, someone else must take over.

Glucagon is a hormone that stimulates your liver to release stored glucose into your bloodstream when your blood glucose levels are too low. Injectable glucagon kits are used as a medication to treat someone with diabetes that has become unconscious from a severe insulin reaction. Glucagon kits are available by prescription. Speak with your health care provider about whether you should buy one, and how and when to use it.

I'm no doctor, but if this was the case, and there was no one to help him, it could well have been an unfortunate accident due to diabetes.

"Hypoglycemia can happen suddenly. It is usually mild and can be treated quickly and easily by eating or drinking a small amount of glucose-rich food. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can get worse and cause confusion, clumsiness, or fainting. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma, and even death."

I'm no doctor either but since glucose is readily replaced by eating carbohydrates I can only assume he was 1) unaware of his condition and possibly not eating properly, if at all and 2),possibly drinking alcohol which would inflame his health condition. All pure speculation on my part. I find it strange that one could not get sufficient carbohydrates in their diet here.

And this quote belongs to someone else,
"table42 wrote:

Ok, I see what you mean, but it could have been a result of insulin shock from diabetes. The diagnosis was hypoglycemia :etc"

You've attributed it to the wrong contributor.

Also, "The diagnosis was hypoglycemia :
That certainly sounds better than long term shortage of sugar. It's not in the given text. Is that your diagnosis or an official post mortem?

The hospital report says "coma hypoglycemique" which i took upon myself to translate (not diagnose) as "hypoglycemia".
