North Korea's Angkor Panorama Museum in SR
I'd never heard of it. Opened in December apparently. $15 a visit if you're interested.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/f ... angkor-watNorth Korean tour guides lead visitors through the regime’s latest cultural showpiece, a grand new panorama museum reported to have cost $24m.
The museum’s showpiece is a 120m long, 13m high, 360° mural painted by the country’s lauded Mansudae studio artists.
But this isn’t Pyongyang and the mural does not depict scenes of heroism by the ruling Kim dynasty. Instead the museum is in Siem Reap in Cambodia, a stone’s throw from the world heritage site of Angkor Wat but thousands of miles from the seat of the DPRK regime, and the paintings depict the Angkor era of 802 -1431.
Part grand design and part diplomacy project, the Angkor Panorama museum, which opened in December, is the latest cultural export North Korea hopes will bring in much-needed funds for its struggling economy...

Ah, you beat me! Saw that too.
Will definitely check out it when I'm in Siem Reap.

Re: North Korea's Angkor Panorama Museum in SR
Just came back from a visit. USD 15.00 for Barang and USD 3.00 for the Missus Officially USD 7.00 but she got a guide discount..... Paintings are absolutely stunning. I do not know the exact way they were done but it is very impressive. We were the only guests and yes, they turned on lights and A/C as we arrived, meaning it was stinking hot. Good PR lady who managed to explain everything. Khmer GF was impressed, too. There is a little bit on Angkor outside the actual room with the building, this is FOC. No photos as those are not allowed inside.

Thanks Hanno.
I'd read the entire thing was financed, designed, painted and installed by North Koreans flown in for the job. And they keep all the (mighty US dollar) revenue for years (forgot how many). If I were Cambodian, I'd be a little ticked off that something so Khmer was entirely built by outsiders.

A few were minted by this deal and will continue to get a slice of the pie somehow, as for the rest, they know their deal...mouth shut, head down...

It was, and even though it seems to look unprofitable at the moment projects like these are always going present other opportunities. This exhibition might need some better publicity, but once it gets on the main itinerary for even a fraction of the tourists visiting town it could be a big earner. It also does a good job in highlighting DPRK craftsmanship.ExPenhMan wrote:Thanks Hanno.

After 10 years, Cambodia gets 50% of the profit, after 20 years 100%
And yes, the Korean tour buses will put it on their itinerary eventually, kick-backs are currently being discussed.

Some photos of what's on display in the museum. Just to give you an idea.
Thanks to Koon Khmer.
