PHNOM PENH - A 42-year-old Nigerian has gone on trial accused of bringing more than 14 kilos of crystal methamphetamine from China to Cambodia.
Iheonu Gabriel was charged by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court prosecutor with drug possession and trafficking. He faces a life sentence if convicted.
Presiding Judge Chuon Soreasy said Mr Gabriel was arrested in June 2016 by Interior Ministry anti-drug trafficking police at a Cambodia-Vietnam international checkpoint in Tbong Khum province.
He was arrested after he arrived to pick up a consignment of clothes with drugs hidden underneath which were sent from China via Vietnam, Mr Soreasy said. “He aimed at transporting the drugs seized from the Vietnamese border to Phnom Penh,” he said.
Police seized 14.47 kilos of drugs, Mr Soreasy said.
Mr Gabriel denied the allegations in court on Friday.
But he admitted that on the day of his arrest he was asked by his cousin named Pert to collect luggage containing clothes belonging to Mr Pert’s Chinese girlfriend Jacky which had been sent from China. Upon picking up the luggage he was arrested and handcuffed by police...

Re: Nigerian on trial for trafficking over 14kgs of crystal meth from China

- Reportedly thanks to a tipoff from Chinese authorities, Cambodian and Vietnamese authorities confiscated 14kg, 468.50 grams of methamphetamine tablets on June 10, 2016 at the border of Thmor Khum between Cambodia and Vietnam. The drugs originated from China and were being sent to Cambodia via Vietnam.
This meant the Cambodian authorities were waiting to arrest 42 year old Nigerian man, GABRIEL IHEONU, when he came to pick up the package containing the drugs at the border crossing.
The accused said he was innocent, but when police later searched his room they found a large amount of drugs, scales, and plastic bags, so they knew he was a drug dealer.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined 80M riel in Phnom Phenh courthouse for drug possession and trafficking on the morning of 10 October 2017.

[Note: Contrary to the original report, the drug being trafficked was not crystal meth, but methamphetamine tablets.]
