Nigerian arrested for violence and illegal detaining

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I guess if you don't have high education and you can't depend on yourself. It is better to have someone you can rely on. i talked to a few people. They said they are willing to stay with someone who can support them instead of working in sweatshop and get $100 per month.
A difficult choice to make, it will be a hard life either way.
I think it is like fishing. If you are lucky enough, i might get a big and nice fish.
Or hook a plastic bag and see weed.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

You are a newbie to Cambodia, but it seems like you know more about it and its people. Cambodians do discriminate each other. People who live in the city always feel that they are better than the one from province. If you have dark skinned they would assume that you are poor.
Thank you, i am a very observant person, i love the country and its culture, 95% of my friends here are Khmer, and is generally who i spend all my time with, and as mekongmouse said, in the white western world having a tan is seen as a high social status because you have the money to visit hotter countries on holiday, the same with the khmers who have darker skins are seen as poor from the provinces, its the reverse but i can see the logic of it, although i tend to prefer the province girls over the city girls, ive be walking down the street with a darker skinned girl (be it someone im dating or a friend) and on numerous occasions ive had khmers making comments like "make sure you wear condom, she dark skin, think have HIV"

I'd also add that the city vs province thing exists in most countries. It is certainly a perception in the US. Though really, it is also truth that city vs province can largely be described as educated vs not educated. I think city people look at rural people and see that they generally hold more superstititious beliefs, have less education, and are poorer. City people usually understand more about the business world and market economy and want to share this knowledge. But rural folks often feel like this is condescending. Maybe it is, but if you're poor and uneducated and a person with education and money is giving you advice, it is best to at least listen.

yeah know what ya saying,
that divide can really be seen over here as well, i think more so than any country ive visited, the difference between the hi-so city khmers and the rural province folk is really dramatic, ive got friends from the province who never went to school and dont have an education and were just brought up by their families in the village, and sometimes the way they think/act/behave/beliefs can really surprise you, i do love hearing about things that they believe though can be very interesting

Right reading book about our culture can help, but it is even better to learn about khmer culture by socializing with Cambodians.

I also heard about the preference of western people for getting their skin tanned. I have always talked to people about this too. We Cambodian see thing differently from you guys.

I would not suggest you to use condom for HIV reason if she is a decent province girl, but maybe for pregnancy reason. :thumb:

You are claiming that they don't have higher education or perhaps never have chance to go to school. So, it seems like they don't speak English while it is hardly enough for them to learn khmer. I wonder how can you communicate with them to learn and understand more about them. Do you speak fluent khmer? If not do you think there are misunderstandings in the conversation sometime which led you to misunderstand about them? BTW it would be great if you can share with us about their actions/ behaviors/beliefs which surprised you the most.

I am not a city kid, but i have been residing here (PP) more than 5 years now. I was born and grew up in the rural area too, but where i grew up is not really like a rural or remote area as we have everything. we have electricity, running water, Language and computers schools are available. Reading through your comments i have a feeling that you have more rural khmer friends than me. I don't have many khmer friends. To be honest, i also don't know much about the lifestyle of other khmer who live in really far remote areas.

I knew about a 1/2 dozen 136 girls who had African bfs. They were always having problems w/them ripping them off or hitting them, but kept returning to the guys for for the pole of soul.

That's the reason our society is immoral? Yes, I saw some people do that. Yes, they can have what they want, just look after their beauty, be entertainment and pretend to be nice kitties of rich men. Don't care if he is any one's husband or dad!

Do you mean Khmer girls? I think they are not strong enough to deal with black men. I think the way we educate our women doesn't make our women strong. My mum always told me that being a woman we have to be patient, learn how swallow stones and bitter things. I think these way make women become victim easily.
