NGO Urges Tightened Restrictions on Influx of Chinese Nationals to Cambodia

Many Chinese nationals living in Cambodia are part of criminal gangs and “carry illegal weapons, which they use freely,” causing Cambodian residents in several provinces to fear for their safety,..

Cambodia should tighten restrictions on the influx of Chinese nationals to the country, according to a local rights group, which says the community is responsible for rampant violent crime and loose ethics that are contributing to the downfall of society.

A recent report by the National Police, under Cambodia’s Ministry of the Interior, said that there are some 250,000 Chinese nationals living in Cambodia, including around 100,000 each in the capital Phnom Penh and Preah Sihanouk province.

“They are involved in cybercrimes and unethical driving behavior, and regularly resort to violence, such as chopping and stabbing people at entertainment centers. These bad behaviors have led to anarchy in our Cambodian society.”

In his report, Yun Min said that while some Chinese nationals were involved in organized crime and extortion, much of the conflict between Cambodians and Chinese immigrants to the region stemmed from petty disputes.

Ath Bony of the Ministry of the Interior’s General Department of Immigration sought to downplay fears over Chinese nationals in Cambodia on Wednesday, saying that the community has brought investment to the country and provided many jobs for Cambodians.

“There is nothing to worry about for the Khmer people because this is the general evolution of the world,” he said, without elaborating.

Is it his opinion that a Chinese takeover is "the general evolution of the world"?

More like the general fattening of his wallet and bank account. Well placed Khmers are making money hand over fist from this Chinese pivot to Cambodia.

For the first time I am hearing some angry grumbles from Khmer about Chinese killing Khmer, mostly from reckless driving, and some mutterings of vigilante action on FB.

Khmers are very slow to anger, but once they pop their corks, it is hard for calm to return.

Khmers will harbor building resentment as the Chinese continue to take away their business, disrespect their culture and generally piss everyone off. This resentment will erupt eventually, probably beginning with something unrelated like a protest with the frustration turning to the invaders. I'm reminded of being in Jakarta in 98 when Indonesians protested and rose up against Suharto, turning on the Chinese killing hundreds of them and burning China Town after despising them for years.

Yes the burning of Glodok, and the enormous pogroms of Chinese throughout Java in sukarno's time are inescapable examples of what could happen.

People get angry about lots of things.
But smouldering race-based anger explodes like nothing else.

250,000?? not likely, figure should be around 1,000,000 in total, and about 60% at SHV and 40% at PP.
anyway, its good to see some report brought up this issue in form of report.

The Chinese have not assimilated into Khmer culture well down on the coast. Much of the concern steming from Sihanoukville.

The new law today restricting certain jobs to Khmer workers is a very good step in the right direction. Also the stopping of new online gambling licences may also mean the Chinese will need to rethink their casino plans . All positive.
