Australian woman detained in Cambodia, after nearly 2kg of heroin found in her luggage at PP airport.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Take a look back on page 1 of this thread and check the time of Cruisemonkey's post and my post.

I was correcting the info provided in the OP as it made no sense.

My apologies for deceiving you.

I'm sorry for my initial title about this case, i'm fairly doing well in speaking and understanding Google Translatish, and assume too often that many others do too... Herods, it could be worse if she (i..) smuggled hemorrhoids (...into the title!)
I actually don't give a flying fuck, furthermore nice to meet you all here! :thumb:

Actually, the competent authorities now say that she wasn't going to take the drugs to Australia.

She was arrested upon arrival from Brazil, and her plan was to give the drugs to someone in Cambodia.

She says that she was hired by a Nigerian to bring the drugs to Cambodia.

So if the Australian Federal Police knew that her plan was to offload the drugs in Cambodia, it makes sense that they tipped of the Cambodian authorities.

A 39-year-old Australian-Vietnamese woman was arrested on Saturday morning by anti-transnational crime police in collaboration with immigration and customs officers at Phnom Penh International Airport for transporting nearly two kilos of heroin from Brazil to Cambodia.

Chea Seng, deputy chief of the anti-transnational crime department, identified the suspect as Tran Ve Thi.

She was apprehended at about 11am after she arrived from Brazil. “She was arrested after police inspected her luggage and found the drugs hidden inside it,” Mr Seng said. “Police seized a total of 1.814 grams of heroin, which were wrapped in plastic and put under the bottom of the luggage.”

Mr Seng said the suspect claimed she was hired by a Nigerian to bring the drugs from Brazil and give them to an unidentified man in Cambodia.

He added that police are now searching for others involved in the case.

The suspect has been accused of drug possession and trafficking and faces a life sentence in convicted.

She remains in detention pending her first court appearance.

Smuggling heroin to SEA from Brazil ? That doesn't make sense.

Are we sure it's heroin? The classic scenario here is a mule who arrives with "coke" from Brazil via Dubai for delivery to a Nigerian in Cambodia who then takes it to Thailand and onwards. Perhaps that's the story here, but it was incorrectly reported in the original Khmer news, and then that was repeated in Oz news and the KT because they copy and paste ?

I think you're on to something here.

And if you look at the picture below with the drug testing kit, you will see that chemicals are a dark purple colour.

It looks like the dark purple translates as MDMA or something similar on common drug testing kits.

Would it make more sense for her to be smuggling MDMA from Brazil rather than heroin?

??why would they bring heroin all that way to a country where heroin is produced ( and cheaper) in the area?
MDMA is also MASS produced in Myanmar
Does not make sense at all

One of these news reports is wrong( typical copy an paste without checking sources) and /or the drug was mis identified...

So far, the KT is the only news outlet that says she came from Brazil. I'm wondering if they didn't make it up, based on previous cases of drug trafficking at PIA? Or maybe they used Google translate ? :plus1: No one else has mentioned a Nigerian connection either. The KT reporting has been a little shoddy lately.
Bangkok: An Australian woman born in Vietnam has been arrested at Phnom Penh's international airport with 1.8 kilograms of heroin allegedly hidden in a suitcase case .

Australian Federal Police played a key role in the arrest of 39 year-old Ve Thi Tran on Saturday morning as she was about to fly to Australia via Hong Kong.

An immigration official at Phnom Penh airport, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to comment, said Ms Tran was preparing to return to Australia via Hong Kong when she was detained.
The arrest followed a tip-off from the Australian Federal Police, the official told AAP.

If anyone can make out what brand this drug testing kit is, we can check to see what kind of drug it is. IIRC, JICA donated a lot of drug testing equipment to PPIA.
