since ur required to use the app when u leave home and checkin when you get somewhere.
it must require u activate ur gps so it can track you,
otherwise how would it know you left home an why bother checking in when you do ?
Have you looked at the app? If you want to register, you have to register your hotel / guesthouse too, and the scan function is not to scan your passport / ID card, but the guests ID card. The app currently available only requires permission for mobile data / WiFi use and background refreshing. No GPS.

Well, time will tell how this will pan out.

You need to scan your passport info, give your address, and update when you check-in/out somewhere else in the kingdom
Does that include short-time?

Its permissions allows it to turn on location i was told
Then you were told a fairy tale. It doesn't, at least the app currently available for IOS doesn't.

so how does this work if you live with a cambodian family and they (technically) own the house
or even if you rent but they are the registered tenants?
could this be another poorly thought-through scheme from the royal government of cambodia?

.

Yes, from what I can gather, immigration are busy modernising their data gathering. So wherever you had to register before - hotel, guesthouse, condo, sangkat - they want to transfer your data (pp and visa number etc) on to an app. Your details go on the app and that's it, unless you move to another residence.
So AFAIK there's no tracking you by GPS when you leave home, but if you change residences then it has to be registered. No change really, except that you might be in the shit with this new registration if you are overstaying your visa.
