Hun Chea, a nephew of Prime Minister HE and three-star lieutenant general, was detained on Wednesday for questioning over a shooting incident that took place at Chea's house on Tuesday night, police said.
Phnom Penh Municipal Police Chief Chuon Sovann confirmed that Ministry of Interior police took Chea in on Wednesday. Around 10 rounds were fired in an unspecified incident at Chea's home in Daun Penh district's Psar Thmey I commune last night, according to Sovann, who gave few other details.
"The municipal police did not detain Hun Chea," he said. "It was the police from the security department of the Ministry of Interior."

Police official jailed after shots fired at home
May 3, 2018
A high-ranking police official was sentenced to 18 months in jail by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday after he was arrested by the authorities over discharging his service weapon during an argument with his wife.
Authorities identified the accused as Lieutenant General Hun Chea, a high-ranking police official.
Y Rin, spokesman for the court, said last night that the court sentenced Mr Chea to 18 months in prison for death threats and damaging property.
“The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison,” Mr Rin said.
Lt Gen Chea fired ten shots into the air, threatening to kill his wife during a dispute on Tuesday night at about 11.30pm at his villa in Phsar Thmey I commune.

More news from his past:
Nephew of HE is made one-star general
May Titthara | Publication date 11 December 2014 | 07:41 ICT
Prime Minister HE has promoted his wayward nephew Hun Chea to brigadier general in the National Police, despite a less than sterling reputation as an upholder of law and order.
Chea has had several run-ins with the law himself over the years.
In December 2010, HE made an unusual public appeal for Chea to return home after his uncle accused him of cheating on his wife and involvement with drugs. He also called on hotel owners to bar Chea from staying on their property.
“According to the investigation, now [Hun Chea] is staying in a hotel with a woman, and there is a group of drug [users] involved with him,” HE said at the time.

Re: PM's nephew Hun Chea immediately convicted after shooting spree
I taught another of his nephews, who was 14 at the time, in 2006. He wasn't intellectually gifted, but had a great attitude and personality; he never flaunted his family connections.I once overheard a conversation he had with friends about severe bullying by a gang of ultra-nationalistic Koreans. They advised him to inform his father or uncle. He said he would never do that, as he knew the consequences and didn't want to be responsible. The nephews aren't all bad.

Cambodia PM HE’s Nephew Jailed Following Whirlwind Shooting Trial
2018-05-03 RFA
A court in Cambodia has sentenced Hun Chea, a nephew of Prime Minister HE, to 18 months in prison following a whirlwind trial that took place on the same day he was arrested for firing a gun during a domestic dispute.
Hun Chea, who is also a three-star general, had been drinking on the evening of May 1, when he fired off at least 10 rounds near his home in the capital Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district, according to local authorities.
He was arrested the following morning, sent to the Ministry of Interior for questioning, and was in trial by afternoon at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, where Judge Ros Piseth handed him the 18-month sentence for “making death threats” and “intentionally damaging property.”
Hun Chea, the son of HE’s older brother, Hun San, had numerous run-ins with the law from 2000-2011—including as the result of his alleged involvement with his cousin Hun To in a 2001 shooting incident in the capital that left two people injured. While the cousins were briefly jailed, the case against them was dropped due to “insufficient evidence” that they were in possession of weapons at the time.
In 2008, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a motorist dead.
Despite several arrests, Hun Chea has always been released after a brief detention, and any charges against him have been dropped.

Officials mum on swift sentencing of Hun Chea
4 May 2018
Official(s) remained tight-lipped on Thursday about the sudden arrest and snap trial of three-star General Hun Chea – nephew to the prime minister – who was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Wednesday over a shooting incident.
Numerous officials from the Interior Ministry and Phnom Penh Municipal Court either claimed no knowledge of, or redirected questions about, the incident on Thursday. Chea’s conviction came just hours after his arrest the day following the shooting.
Multiple local news outlets – including pro-government mouthpiece Fresh News and English-language daily Khmer Times – made no mention of Chea’s relation to Prime Minister HE in their coverage.
When asked about reports that the incident was a domestic argument with his wife, Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak directed questions to the court and hung up.
