NagaWorld Unionists Arrested From Union Office on New Year’s Eve

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Union reps have never run their own companies, even though they think it is their company, and they only represent the union.

Exactly what Freightdog alluded to.

Saying that I don’t know if unions reps are the same world over. I’d imagine they are.
Aren’t the unions in the US all by mafia groups? And what is their interest exactly - to make money and control the employees and employers.

Mannanman, you are a prime example of a brainwashed goon who licks the laps of the rich and powerful -- deluded, blind, completely oblivious to the grotesque exploitation of the super-rich owners of everything. The world is owned by less than one percent of all people... The average super-rich owner expends thousands of times the energy and material than you or me. Add to these facts, people like Jeff and Elon think that they are entitled to keep workers down, earning little to nothing for working slave-like 10 or 12 hour shifts. If you had to work in an Amazon warehouse, you would quickly change your tune, lol. Read this, if you can:

Why does Warren Buffet not agree that the workers of 'Special Metals', currently on strike in the U.S., should not receive a decent offer? This company is making millions and millions in profits every quarter! And this little little bit is all that the boss could offer to the strikers:
  • "employees were offered a contract with no pay raise the first year, only a $2,000 signing bonus, and then pay increases of 1% the second year and 2% a year the following three years. It said the company wants to raise the cost of health coverage for workers from $275 a month to $1,000. And it reduced vacation time they have already accrued."
A pay increase of one per cent -- after a year? Inflation is running at over 6% in the U.S. at the moment.

What kind of fascist libertarian bullshit fantasyland do you live in Mannanman? To decry unions blithely, off-handedly. You clearly know next to nothing. In the case of the UK, it was that awful, good-for-nothing despot, Margaret Thatcher and her moronic friends, who helped gut unionism forever... Mannanman, you are an embarrassing reminder of the extent to which right-wing neo-liberal propaganda has seriously debased the human intellect... You see nothing, understand nothing and know nothing...

When I happened to pass by the area earlier in the day it struck me that with the heavy police presence something was going on.

Unions, I am working class, but the union that was operating at one of my past workplaces was more for the company then that of the workers.

I come from an area of a strong labour party and beliefs of such. But, Magi Thatcher with her privatisations, and giving the working-class the right to buy did much more for me and my families improved lifestyle at the time. Also, the coal miners at the time came out better than expected, also not to see their own boys not going down the pit.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Bleh, the 1% argument gets me riled.

"Capitalist scumbags - I hate Thatcher!" ...
"I love Communism, it isn't Stalin's fault, or his cronies, he amassed all the wealth of the people who loved him while they died of starvation, penniless"
"I hate money, we should be religious & virtuous like the Pope ... I'm happy to give him all that gold, he deserves it!"

Image

The 1% is human nature, it is inevitable; it isn't because of Thatcher, Stalin or the Pope. "A fool and his money are soon parted".

The 1% always changes (Anyone seen Julius Caesar or Genghis Khan's descendents rolling in cash? Thought not..) - maybe one day you'll be one of them, or your descendents will be, who knows.

The 10% always whinge about the 1% & ignore the 90% who are in the words of Jason Statham "Proper fucked". Get off that donkey disguised as a high horse.

If you have a bad employer that is impairing your progress in life, then damn well move, don't sit there waiting for handouts dependent on some union leader's negotiation skills.

You may be right. Probably.

However, how does being aware and angry that this is true alter my daily life - with my family, friends, beer etc?
It doesn’t.

Margaret Thatcher was, possibly, the greatest politician/PM the UK has ever had and, most certainly, the greatest female politician to have ever lived.

As soon as my employer got rid of most of the unions the workers got fuck all and management started getting big increases and bonuses, unions are there to keep the bastards honest.
We used to be run by a guy on $200k now run by someone on 5- 10 million but hey he works hard we are all told so deserves it, meanwhile me and my fellow workers also worked hard, but we're dumb cunts, need to suck it up.
If that's what people think the world should be I'm glad my working days are over because it's dog eat dog out there and some like it that way.
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

Retired sailor, your line of questioning, starting with your lead question (quoted above). Goes some way to make Mannamans point for him. I don’t know what your agenda or back ground may be, but in my working career, I’ve come across two distinct types of union and their representative.

The first, whose main objective is the promotion and preservation of the union, and along with it the representation and protection of its members.
The second, whose main objective is the representation and protection of its members, and thereby promoting its own existence on merit.

You strike me as belonging to the former. You’re more than welcome to respond and demonstrate that this is not the case (in a separate thread, if you wish) But you need to do some work to overcome the fact that you started on a false position by deliberately misrepresenting and taking out of context mannaman’s comments.
That's alot to extrapolate from a simple question, still got some fumes left in you from last night pal?

You’re a union rep aren’t you. Only a rep would use that language.

It’s my opinion. Deal with it.
