Mystery "robbery" of "million dollar artefact": Kampong Speu

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

- Police in Kampong Speu province are trying to unravel the mystery of a robbery in which the victim said an artefact worth millions of dollars was taken.
Five people allegedly robbed a resident of Rolaing Chork commune of the item yesterday.

Samraong Torng district police chief Khut Sophal said there were conflicting accounts of the robbery and he did not believe the claims of the victim, Sun Dim, 51.

From his inquiries, Mr Sophal said he was not calling the event a robbery at all.

“Five unknown people driving five motorbikes came to his house and asked to see an artefact. We don’t know what the artefact was, but he said that it was bronze,” Mr Sophal said.

“He ordered the five to worship bananas, lit incense sticks and prepared ritual rice.
“He took the item in a steel bowl and then they snatched it at gunpoint and drove off.

“According to the victim, he was tied with a Khmer scarf and he chased the five suspects on a motorbike about seven or eight kilometres, but could not catch them,” he said.

Mr Sophal said there were a lot of irregularities in Mr Dim’s answers.
He questioned how Mr Dim could chase the suspect on his motorbike if he was alone and tied up.
The victim also said he was shot in the head but the injury looked like it had been sustained trying to grab the artefact back from the suspects.

Regardless of what Mr Dim was saying, Mr Sophal said police were still committed to arresting the suspects because he wanted to nail the truth.

Absolutely fuckin hilarious.
Why is it always Kampong Speu though? I've heard numerous stories about that place, one more unbelievable than the next.
Used to date a girl from KS, think I may have dodged a bullet there.

Four people have been arrested over the theft of a statue from a man well known for having a collection of sacred bronze religious items.
Police said the arrests took place between Thursday and Saturday in Kampong Thom province and Phnom Penh.

Mr Sak said the robbery took place on May 24 when the four drove two motorbikes to the house of the victim, Sin Rim, 50, in Samraong Torng district.
The four, posing as people who sought to pray, robbed him and tied him up with a scarf.
While trying to escape, they confronted his son Sok Reth, 31, and beat him on the head with a bamboo stick before making off with three bronze pieces.

“We cannot confirm if the stolen bronze is fake or real because this is disputed by the suspects and the victims,” Mr Sak said.
“The suspects said the bronze is fake, while the owner said it is real.”
