Mother and Daughter Drown Trying to Save their Dog

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Mother and Daughter Drown Trying to Save their Dog

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

So sad.! Seeing their dog fall in the water, a mother and daughter then went down to help it, but unfortunately, this caused the death of both mother and child in Koh Rong.

Cambodia News, (Koh Rong): There is a report from citizens on social media today that two people drowned at Prek Kandal Pond, a fish pond, at 4:30 pm on January 18, 2021 in Derm Thkov village, Koh Rong district, Koh Rong city, Sihanoukville province.
According to the confirmation of the police, SNTV BREAKING NEWS said that the woman, 40 years old, is Min Sopheap, and the daughter, Yim Kim, was 16 years old, both living in the village above.
According to the source of a witness near the pond, mother and child drowned when they got into the pond to save their dog.
RIP.

A photo from Khmer news shows that it is a man-made fish pond, surrounded by a steep and slippery plastic slope, and how easy it would be be to slip in to the pond, and then not be able to get out again. It looks extremely dangerous for the local population.

Not so for Cambodians. Pets are tools, not family members, to most.

It's a sad story, and just another example of the crazy recklessness in Cambodia.

<edit>
And yes, my reply was pretty insensitive. Didn't mean to.

Yeah, 10 years ago Kammekor would have been right in 99% of cases. But nowadays especially in city there are loads of people with pure (or nearly) breed dogs. Just look at the number of places on Facebook selling puppies imported from thailand, china or vietnam. Its a pretty significantly sized business.

My Khmer ex had a couple dogs. Terrible at actually looking after them, letting them run free on the streets until one of them was Lexused. Plenty have pets, now for the standard of care to get up to speed.
