More Chinese Takeover in Sihanoukville

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

It's not gone. Only moved on to other provinces.

they can't hide. china obviously has some sophisticated tcp/ip cops who can ID to mac level and chase the SIM cards using local allies.
see anyone walking in and out of those casinos other than employees?
no?
there is your answer to the china investment boom.
it is literally illegal ( in china ) for chinese companies to make foreign casino investments since august.
i have cited the ref repeatedly.
so, while the spinach employees are legal under cambodian law with visa and wp in order
china cyber cops ID them and revoke their passports
thus their tenure here becomes illegal
china cops notify local cops
because no passport.
hope i made it plain this time.

At present, there are 24 casinos and 14 clubs in Sihanoukville. Most of them are run by Chinese nationals and more are renting villas for online gambling which the industry calls them "spinach."
Since early 2016, Cambodian police have gathered forces to repeatedly conduct large-scale searches and repatriations of Chinese nationals residing in Sihanoukville. As a result, the number of "spinach" workers have dropped substantially. This has also caused huge losses to hotels and casinos in Sihanoukville.

Some hotel and casino owners have outspokenly stated that they may go bankrupt and thus hope that the government will protect Chinese investors who come to Sihanoukville preventing panic.
perhaps something lost in translation ?

If I understand it correctly, online gambling is legal under Cambodian law if its conducted in a bricks and mortar licensed Casino. If its done in a rented house, GH etc with no license, then its illegal under Cambodian law.

However, under China law, its illegal for offshore online gaming companies to target mainland Chinese. That seems to be overlooked here in Snooky as its only the unlicensed operations/scams that have been targeted by the Chinese/Khmer cyber cops. I havent heard of any workers in licensed casinos being busted.

The article states that licensed Casinos here are worried they could go bankrupt, somehow in relation to the spinach workers (from unlicensed operations) being busted.
How does that work ? Are they afraid the bad press from Spinach worker arrests will rub off on them, and mainland punters will give Snooky a miss for gambling holidays ?

they are working under licensed casinos, i am sure. legal here- online gambling is illegal in china and it does not matter where the casino is located. it is illegal for chinese citizens to participate, in the same way it is illegal for usa citizens to engage in bribery in any jurisdiction worldwide.

OK, but so far its just scammers in unlicensed premises that have been arrested.
The cops haven't stormed any licensed premises yet. Therefore, I'm not sure what the article means about hotels/casinos here being worried they could go bankrupt.
