Interior Minister Sar Kheng Presents Five Issues in Sihanoukville
30/06/19 18:15
Sihanoukville (FN), June 29 - Minister of Interior Sar Kheng presented the five issues that are currently challenging the coast of Cambodia, Sihanoukville province, approximately 230 km west of the capital Phnom Penh.
The minister also urged for urgent resolutions to tackle the issues, speaking Saturday at the appointment ceremony of the new governor.
The five issues include, first, land conflict and management: as the land price surges, many conflicts arise; thus, the minister urged for peaceful resolution between all parties to avoid violence.
Second, construction quality: the minister urged for a careful examination on quality and safety of building, including fire issue.
Third, security of Koh Rong and the islands of Sihanoukville: number of tourists visiting islands increases steadily. In order to ensure the security, the minister urged authorities to strengthen their competency; three police officers at each target; and intervention force to intervene promptly as the situation unfolded.
Fourth, infrastructure: the booming of populations require better infrastructure.
Fifth, sewage and dumping water that requires the efforts from Ministry of Land Management and Construction; Ministry of Public Works and Transport; Ministry of Environment; and Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and other stakeholders.

Huge Chinese influx divides Sihanoukville
Residents of Cambodian resort town question whether its character can be preserved
13 Jul 2019 at 14:21
SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia: An ongoing massive influx of Chinese into the coastal city of Sihanoukville is generating mixed reactions among local residents.
The Chinese began flocking to Sihanoukville about three years ago and their population is now estimated to be the same as that of Cambodian residents, or around 80,000, according to Mayor Y Sokleng.
But other municipal officials suggest the number of Chinese is actually two or three times higher, with the city having been transformed from a sleepy beach town into a bustling city complete with traffic jams.
The capital of Sihanoukville province is located at the tip of an elevated peninsula in the country’s southwest on the Gulf of Thailand, about 230 kilometres southwest of Phnom Penh.
Chuon Narin, the provincial police chief, said that almost 90% of business operations in the city, ranging from hotels, casinos and restaurants to massage parlours, are run by Chinese.
Among the 71 casinos, 48 are operated by Chinese, and 90% of the 436 restaurants in the province are managed by Chinese nationals, he added.
Currently, there are nearly 200 hotels and guesthouses in the province, of which 150 are run by Chinese. They also run 41 karaoke clubs and 46 massage parlours, the police chief added.
These days, many Cambodians who travel to Sihanoukville wonder whether Sihanoukville can retain its traditional charm amid the sea of Chinese signboards seen everywhere.

Re: More Chinese Takeover in Sihanoukville
To be fair the place never had much "character" before the Chinese took over. What little it had however, was a damn sight better than the current situation, and at least it was still in the main a Khmer city, not a Chinese one.

I think he means this..
Traveler magazine's experts rate 99 of the world's great islands, coastlines, and beaches for sustainability and authenticity. 2010.

Sihanoukville 3rd last.
But yes, that was the high point. It is even worse now.

Re: More Chinese Takeover in Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville, Cambodia News: In its latest video highlighting low levels of governance and compliance in Sihanoukville, environmental defenders Mother Nature ask why Chinese development has been allowed to take place in contravention of Cambodia’s constitution and the Land Law
Standing in front of a National Committee of Cambodia’s Coastal Management and Development (NCCCMD) sign prohibiting construction closer than 100 metres of the high tide mark, the campaigner alleges some developments are as close as 16 metres. He then lists five projects currently under development that appear to breach the law.
