‘No More Bets’: China’s New Runaway Hit
Does Cambodia tourism stand a chance IF the Chinese do not return to the Pre covid numbers?
Overseas cyber fraud is even the subject of China’s latest blockbuster, “No More Bets,” which has outsold “Barbie” by more than $200 million and contributed to Southeast Asia's plummeting image as a travel destination. The Kingdom is now viewed on par with Myanmar, and 97% of respondents in one online poll described both countries as off limits.
The government bet heavily on the return of Chinese visitors to revive the Kingdom’s pandemic-stricken tourism sector. It’s not clear if there is a Plan B

https://sixthtone.com/news/1013515?utm_ ... dium=emailInspired by thousands of real cases, the movie offers an unparalleled glimpse into the dark world of overseas cyber fraud that has grown rampant in China.
“One more viewer, one less fraud victim.” With this slogan, a new Chinese film — “No More Bets” — has captivated the country by tackling the issue of rampant overseas cybercrimes.
The movie offers an unprecedented look into the complex web of overseas cyber fraud, drawing inspiration from real fraud cases across China and featuring realistic portrayals of the industry’s inner workings.
Since its release on Aug. 8, “No More Bets” has dominated the domestic box office, raking in over 1.8 billion yuan ($248.1 million) — more than twice the earnings of “Meg 2: The Trench,” which was released Aug. 4., according to online ticketing website Maoyan. In comparison, “Barbie” collected $33.3 million over 25 days.

Yup, maybe bad for KoW's image in the short term and the Oknhas who own the buildings these horror shows are run from but gotta be good for the tortured slaves that are driven to suicide by this grim industry.

Re: ‘No More Bets’: China’s New Runaway Hit
Real estate which accounts for a huge part of savings and investments in China is on the brink of failure. Zhongzhi Enterprise Group, Evergreen, Country Garden Holdings are falling apart...some 500 billion $ at risk.
Chinese expensive holidays and gambling sprees may be a part of the past affecting not only Cambodia. Sure I dont see happy times coming for places like SHV betting on the Chinese coming back in great numbers. Loads of condos will fall apart in time (cheap building materials and badly built/managed) and the ridiculous prices will fall. Losses will be huge.
Will be interesting to see how the KP will manage that.

China’s struggling property giant Evergrande files for bankruptcy protection in UStruffledog wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 3:20 pm Real estate which accounts for a huge part of savings and investments in China is on the brink of failure. https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... tion-in-usChina’s Evergrande Group, the world’s most heavily indebted property developer and the poster child for the country’s property crisis, has filed for bankruptcy protection in a US court.
The company sought protection under chapter 15 of the US bankruptcy code, which protects its US assets while it attempts a restructuring deal. The code also provides mechanisms for dealing with insolvency cases involving more than one country.
Evergrande, once China’s top property developer, was found in 2021 to be struggling with more than $300bn in liabilities, as government officials tightened scrutiny on the real estate sector. Its liquidity crisis soon made it a symbol of the country’s property sector woes.
....Last month, however, Evergrande posted a combined loss of $81bn for 2021 and 2022, prompting worries about the viability of the debt restructuring plan.

Many girlie bars here have been expensively remodelled to Asian tastes, gold and velvet everywhere (ironic, considering the patrons are low-grade). A lot of the girls have also adopted an aloof style and attitude to match. These places are pretty much empty most nights. Interesting to see how this all plays out.

Junta is upset

full storyYangon, Myanmar – Myanmar’s junta has lashed out at close ally China over a blockbuster film on human trafficking and scam compounds that has “tarnished” its reputation, state media reported on Friday.
Chinese thriller “No More Bets” tells the story of a computer programmer who is trafficked to an unnamed Southeast Asian country and forced to work as an online scammer for a syndicate.
It does not mention Myanmar by name but its setting resembles the country’s lawless northern reaches, where Beijing says its citizens are regularly lured or trafficked and forced to work scamming their compatriots online.
