The mental illness problems, the alcohol and drug problems in rural Cambodia are serious problems. How to fix?

I don't know how to put my feelings into words. I think the baby was saved a really bad life, the poor little darling :(

You can't save someone by burning them alive.
& save from what? Just because someone is poor doesn't mean they lead a really bad life. I'm sure the baby's mother loved it dearly or would have grown to.

And when she returned from working away from home she was heavily pregnant & without a husband, which is against traditional custom, this caused the grandfather to be embarrassed with his neighbours as he had a grandchild but no son in law.

There is a similar vein in most Khmer language reports; the murder was provoked because the mother of the baby got pregnant outside of marriage.

I think this man is just a monster and cultural "norms" don't explain this at all.
There are many many cases of Cambodian women who are not married, who have children that are looked after and loved by their family in the village. Source: people I have met.
In cases where the family is ashamed of this, they would say something like "the husband is gone away" and that seemed to be acceptable. It puts the blame on the husband/boyfriend for leaving and saves face for the woman and her family.
Even if the family were not happy about the daughter being pregnant, they accepted the baby as their flesh and blood.
