Monks by day, druggies by night, paid by monthly salary

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

SIEM REAP - At 8:30 pm on May 9, 2018, a roving gang of six fake Cambodian monks was arrested by police in Siem Reap. For the past six years, the gang members were traveling around Cambodian provinces being paid a monthly wage for their daily begging. By day, the gang would go out begging in monks' robes, and then by night they would take off their robes and dress in jeans, take drugs, and stay in guesthouses as civilians.

According to the fake monk team leader, Phan Phanna, each member was earning 100,000 Reil to 150,000 riel per day from begging. Then they would give all the money to him to keep, and he paid them a salary of $ 200 to $300 per month.
The driver said he got paid a salary for $250 per month for driving the Camary car plate no. 2A-5141 around the provinces to take the fake monks to places to beg for money, and that he also had to buy their drugs (ICE) for them.
The suspects and evidence were detained at Siem Reap police station while the case is being prepared for court.
