Monk defrauds woman of $180,000.
A former deputy chief Buddhist monk at a Kandal province pagoda has been arrested for allegedly cheating a businesswoman out of $180,000.
Keo Kalyan, 38, who was deputy chief of Wat Asrom Oudom Prey Mean in Kandal Stung district, was detained on Wednesday.
Interior Ministry police officer Ly Sothy said that while Mr. Kalyan was a monk, he persuaded the 48-year-old businesswoman to buy a big statue of Phrea Kinesh.
He allegedly told her it was made of bronze, was sacred and was more than 1,000 years old.
It could protect against all kinds of danger and would help the victim to have great success and bring her riches with her businesses.
Mr. Sothy said that after negotiation on the $180,000 sale price, the victim sent the money on June 9, 2016, to Mr. Kalyan via his account with Acleda Bank.
Mr. Kalyan quickly withdrew the money, quit as a monk and left the pagoda until he was arrested on Wednesday...

Monks have personal bank accounts ? Which they use for pagoda business transactions ?
A small flag surely. It's just a step up from selling lucky beads.

Wats do have bank accounts if for no other reason than to safely deposit contributions the faithful make and to pay for expenses such as repairs or expansions. Since he was"deputy chief Buddhist monk" he was perhaps given access to the account.

Yes I know that the wats have bank accounts.Of course they do, with all the loy they get from the faithful. I was just thinking that the silly woman who bought the relic should have at least put the money into a pagoda account, not the monk's personal bank account. Did she not think that was strange ?taabarang wrote:Wats do have bank accounts if for no other reason than to safely deposit contributions the faithful make and to pay for expenses such as repairs or expansions. When the article says "his account it may have been a wat account to which he had access, in fact he could have been the equivalent of a treasurer for the wat. But inasmuch as she believed in the magic powers of a statue it is entirely possible that her business savy was dulled by her religious convictions.
