Crops in Mondulkiri’s district damaged by wild elephants
A herd of rogue wild elephants emerged from the forest in one of Mondulkiri’s district and damaged crops of farmers in the area.
The herd is made of at least four elephants, including a calf, laid waste to crops in Trapeang Phear village, Sre Khtom commune, Keo Seima district, Mondulkiri. The incident was reported on the morning of November 28.
According to local residents, the herd was spotted entering the village from a neighbouring village. The herd has been roaming around in the neighbouring village for three to four days, trampling crops and scaring the local people with their vicious behaviour.
Witnesses stated that the herd was seen emerging from the forest in Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary and travelling from O’Rana Village to Trapeang Village. They continued to trample crops and roam until the morning of November 28. Most recently, they were spotted at a rubber plantation in Trapeang Phear Village.
Director of the Mondulkiri Provincial Department of Environment, Keo Sopheak, stated that he has ordered rangers and from the sanctuary to cooperate with local police to monitor the movements of the elephants. The monitoring of the journey can only be done from afar off as not to alarm the herd and caused it to attack people.
Superstitious residents of the village believed that the presence of the herd is an omen of good luck and the they would bring protection and prosperity from the elephants.

Re: Mondulkiri Wild Elephant Herd Captured on Video
Maybe someone with better knowledge of elephant behaviour can correct me but would elephants normally attack people? My assumption would be that they are more likely to react to being attacked by villagers given typical interactions I see here between animals and locals.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 1:50 am The monitoring of the journey can only be done from afar off as not to alarm the herd and caused it to attack people.

They have become very defensive. Understandably.
If you are ever fortunate enough to come across a wild elephant stay well away even if you have peaceful intentions.
The villages can also be understandably defensive of their crops.
