So they die from diarrhoaea or typhoid, both easily treatable with ofloxacine, cost around $5, because they don't have $10 for the doctor, but that's OK with you?

The problem at least here in rural Cambodia is that if they don't have the money to see a "real" doctor of which there are damn few, they see the local Kru Khmer or witch doctor. They are not only poor, but trapped in a sliding scale of incompetence.

Yeah, seeing a real doctor is around $50 for a private one, not sure how long a Khmer would wait at Russian Friendship hospital to see a state/subsidised doctor, plus they'd have to pay to get there...stupid idea.

I thought this place was the dumping ground for all sorts of shit. If there's a dollar to be made with meds, I don't see antibiotics disappearing soon...

Or in 10-15 years, they die because whatever antibiotic which would easily cure their illness is useless because of resistance, but that's OK by you?

I'm not arguing against antibiotics. I'm arguing against the dangerous and irresponsible usage of it, that is threatening not only cambodians, but the whole world.

Banning antibiotics without subscription might be the wrong end to start things, but it can't continue like this either. Let's hope the new health insurance/tax thing will kick things in right direction, although I doubt it will.

Ok, I don't agree with you. I believe that it is dangerous for people to take antibiotics when they don't need them, because scientific evidence supports the theory that overuse is a principal cause of antibiotic resistance.
How can it be a "scam cooked up by big pharma" to encourage less and more specific use of antibiotics, instead of taking them for every illness on the off-chance that they might work, as is the case in Cambodia at present ? Overuse of antibiotics is a real problem.

As for the recent announcement banning the sale of antibiotics without prescription, I don't believe it will take effect in the near future. Among other reasons, the health system is not organized enough yet to cope with keeping a track on what is sold and to who, and first they need to properly license the pharmacies.
