What is the recent over-use of 'caused a surprise' about?

Can someone get their ducks in a row and suggest a slightly better translation?

When I was on a fire department, we used to call it a "weeny roast." Mostly trailers on fire that you can't really put out because they go up so fast. You just set back and make sure nothing else gets toasted. With petrol involved, you step a little farther away also.
