HE Might Cheat to Surpass Sam Rainsy in Facebook Competition

Only 20 per cent of PM’s recent Facebook 'likes' from Cambodia

Days after Prime Minister HE surpassed 3 million fans on Facebook, an analysis of the premier’s social media followers has found more than half the “likes” garnered by his page in the past month were from abroad – mostly from India and the Philippines – raising questions about their legitimacy.

The analysis, using data collected by social media analytics website socialbakers.com, shows that about 779,000 Facebook accounts “liked” HE in the past month but only 157,331 were located in Cambodia.

The biggest influx, 255,692, came from India, where a total of 332,475 Facebook accounts “like” HE.

Further, over the past 30 days, 98,256 accounts from the Philippines liked the premier, as did 54,972 from Myanmar, 46,368 from Indonesia, 26,527 from Brazil, 12,980 from Mexico, 4,783 from Turkey and 3,952 from the United Arab Emirates.

Overall, 591,717, or nearly 50 per cent, of HE’s 1.2 million international followers were added in the past month.

After hitting 3 million followers, a post on HE’s Facebook page said: “I would like to thank my national compatriots and youths in the country and overseas who support my Facebook page, which has received 3 million likes as of 6:08pm (6 March).

“Facebook has brought me closer with people and allowed me to listen and receive more requests directly from them.

“Through Facebook, I have solved some problems quickly and effectively.”

However, a Cambodia-based digital expert, who asked to remain anonymous, said the geographical distribution of HE’s most recent Facebook followers called into question their validity.

The Fb wars continue. FWIW there are some very jolly defamation laws that might find the title of this thread defamatory. I noticed that the PPP avoided using the word "cheat" for example. We are just a silly forum, but IMO there are signs in the region that we may have to self-censor what is posted in the future to avoid turbulence.
Anyone else agree, or am I just paranoid ?

The Prime Minister a cheat? That's defamation. Heads will have to roll for this one.

EDIT, just read your above post AM after I posted. Not sure about this forum, but I think he won't like this at all. Some asshat in his employ will have to disappear. Let's hope it was Mohan that organized the pay for likes. At least we know how he intends to win the next election now. Not so much Netflix and chill. But Facebook and violence. He seems to be trying to play almost the same game with the Cambodian electorate as he played with the western NGO's.

The FB wars go to court. Well, that didn't take long.
Suggestions that underhand tactics have been used to artificially boost the Facebook popularity of Cambodia's leader has resulted in a lawsuit against an opposition leader and denials that "likes" have been bought from foreign "click farms"...

Rainsy, who was already living in self-imposed exile to avoid another lawsuit, accused government ministers of pressuring members of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) to like the prime minister on Facebook, and of boosting the PM's numbers with fake accounts from overseas.

This prompted a furious response from Som Soeun, a minister who oversees HE's online presence and who has now launched a lawsuit against Rainsy seeking $5,000 compensation for allegedly "twisting the truth". Soeun said that it was untrue that he had advocated using fake accounts overseas to boost the PM's Facebook likes.

"It is not like that at all," he told the English-language Cambodia Daily. "I am a party member; I have to protect my leader and expose His Excellency Sam Rainsy's cheap act, which is opposite to the truth."
Interesting figures:
HE has 3.2 million likes compared with Rainsy's 2.2 million. But both numbers are astonishing for a small developing country. To put this into perspective, British Prime Minister David Cameron has about one million likes on his official Facebook page. Not only does the UK have a population about four times as large as Cambodia's, internet penetration is more than 90% - compared with less than 10% for the southeast Asian country...
