Message from Australia’s ambassador to Cambodia, Angela Corcoran
26 January 2018
- Australia Day is an occasion to celebrate the best of Australia, and what it means to be an Australian. We celebrate our history, our heritage, and the values and institutions that underpin contemporary Australia.
It is an occasion to acknowledge and pay respect to the First Australians – Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people.
On Australia Day we celebrate the diversity of our communities, and the opportunities we enjoy as the “Lucky Country”. We celebrate with family at home and abroad, with new friends and old, and in communities separated by vast stretches of sunburnt land.
So I am delighted we are able to share our Australia Day celebrations with our colleagues and friends in Cambodia... etc

Re: Message from Australia’s ambassador to Cambodia, Angela Corcoran
It's a well-thought out and concise message. Australia has had a good relationship with this country for the past few decades, long may it continue. I can't find the source for it now, but I believe Australia was the first western country to bring humanitarian aid to Cambodia after Pol Pot was chased out of the capital.
Happy Australia Day!
Happy Australia Day!
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Thousands protest 'Invasion Day' on Australia's national day

Melbourne - Tens of thousands of people marched across Australia Friday in an "Invasion Day" protest calling for a rethink of the national day they say is offensive to indigenous people.
The annual January 26 Australia Day holiday commemorates the arrival of the first British settlers in 1788, but for many Australians it marks the beginning of colonial oppression of Aboriginal people.
"Australia is a diverse culture now, and we need to be inclusive to everyone, so change the date (of the national day)," said Melbourne protestor Rachel Muir.
More than 10 000 people joined a march in Melbourne where protestors chanted "always was, always will be Aboriginal land", and holding banners stating "You are on stolen land".
Thousands more people rallied in major cities across the country.
"Australia has to come to terms with our indigenous peoples," said protestor Greg Hunt.
"To celebrate Australia Day on the day that Europeans invaded Australia is an affront and very, very disrespectful to the people whose land we took."
'Divisive' calls
Divisions have deepened in recent years with increasing calls to change the date and protests increasing in size.
In 2017, three local councils in Victoria state voted to no longer recognise January 26 as Australia Day.
In November 2017, youth radio station triple j, whose traditional Australia Day "Hottest 100" music countdown has become synonymous with the national holiday, announced it was moving the event to a different date due to "increasing debate" on the issue.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has long-resisted calls to change the date as divisive.
"We recognise that the history of European settlement in Australia has been complex and tragic for indigenous Australians," he said in a recent speech.
"But above all on Australia Day we recognise and celebrate our achievements as Australians."
"I'm disappointed by those who want to change the date of Australia Day, seeking to take a day that unites Australia and Australians and turn it into one that would divide us."
Aboriginals, whose cultures stretch back tens of thousands of years before the British arrived, remain the most disadvantaged Australians, with higher rates of poverty, ill-health and imprisonment than any other community in the country.
They were believed to have numbered around one million at the time of British settlement, but now make up only about 3% of the total national population of 24 million - meaning there are now fewer Aboriginals than when the first Britons arrived.
Australia day is celebrated across the county, with picnics, traditional Aboriginal performances and citizenship ceremonies, where close to 13 000 new Australians pledged their commitment to the nation on Friday.
A recent poll suggested most Australians were laid back about their national day, and most people do not know why it is held on January 26.
The survey of 1 417 Australians by the Australia Institute found that just over half of respondents did not mind when the day was celebrated.

It might be The Quality of Mercy by William Shawcross. I was reading this recently and he covers the aid program from '79 onwards in great detail. One thing I found interesting is that when a delegation from the ICRC and UNICEF met the then foreign minister HE in 79 to try to organise humanitarian aid, they had to explain to HE what the UN was.John Bingham wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2018 9:30 pm I can't find the source for it now, but I believe Australia was the first western country to bring humanitarian aid to Cambodia after Pol Pot was chased out of the capital.

Which goes to show how smart HE is. When getting someone to explain what humanitarian aid is from the UN, they are guaranteed to fuck up their reasoning it should be given.prahocalypse now wrote: ↑Sat Jan 27, 2018 9:28 amIt might be The Quality of Mercy by William Shawcross. I think HE would have won that argument.

The Phnom Penh Post ran several Australian pieces for Australia Day.
Yes, Phnom Penh has a world class Australian international school!
26 January 2018
The Australian International School of Phnom Penh (AISPP) is delighted and proud to celebrate Australia Day, which is marked every January 26 and falls on a Friday this year.
AISPP stands out among the many international schools in Phnom Penh and is the only educational institution in Cambodia to follow the Australian National Curriculum. The innovative new school is located in Russey Keo, a bustling suburb in the northwest area of the capital near Aeon 2 mall and the new Makro store.
Opened in August 2017 and following the current Australian National Curriculum, AISPP is already a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate IB, Primary Years Program PYP, Middle Years Program MYP and Diploma Program DP. This is a huge achievement for a new school.
AISPP’s aim is to become an innovative, world-class EY- Grade 12, non-denominational international school set on a single campus. Sprawled over 6 hectares, the AISPP campus is stunning. Its brand new purpose-built facilities include a gymnasium, swimming pool, early learning centre, butterfly garden, football pitch and organic garden.
