Although classified as "vulnerable" there are still plenty of these dolphins in Bangladesh.

If need be, a breeding nucleus could be imported and installed.

Encouraging news for the Kratie dolphins with two new baby dolphins spotted this week.

Endangered baby dolphin sightings
16 August 2017
- Two more baby dolphins have been spotted recently in Kratie province, showing encouraging signs of further stabilisation of the Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin population in Cambodia.
The World Wildlife Fund said yesterday that WWF-Cambodia welcomed the births of two dolphin calves in the Mekong Flooded Forest Landscape in Kratie province.

The first calf was spotted on August 11 by locals from Prek Kreing village in Sambo district, who reported the sighting to WWF officials.

Camera in hand, freshwater project assistant Tan Bunwath visited the location immediately to take detailed photos confirming the first new born, believed to be two or three weeks old.

On August 13 another calf, suspected to be only a few days old, was sighted by local people and the WWF research team at the Kampi deep pool 16 kilometres from Kratie town...

Threatened Cambodia river dolphins making 'historic' rebound
23 April 2018
PHNOM PENH (AFP) - The population of Cambodia's critically endangered river dolphin is growing for the first time in decades, conservationists said on Monday (April 23), hailing a major turnaround for the freshwater species.

The Irrawaddy dolphins, known for their bulging foreheads and short beaks, once swam through much of the Mekong river but in recent decades have been limited to a 190km stretch from central Cambodia to its northern border with Laos.

The population has been in steady decline since the first census was taken in 1997, dropping from 200 that year to 80 in 2015 due to habitat loss and destructive fishing practices.

But new births - including three calves in 2018 - and a decline in deaths has put the species on the path to recovery.

The number of dolphins in the Mekong has increased from 80 to 92 in the past two years, according to a survey by Cambodian authorities and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which called the rebound a "historic increase".

The dolphin survival rate is picking up, but there is no room for complacency say the experts. The recent increase in numbers is a welcome rebound after previous losses.

20 June 2018
KRATIE - Rin Nareoun, managing director of the Global Fund for Natural Resource Development in the Greater Mekong said on 19 June : From 2015 to the end of 2017, the number of dolphins has increased from 80 to 92, equivalent to 15%. He said that for the year 2017, there were 9 dolphins born, but also two dead dolphins. For 2018, there were six dolphin offspring and three dead dolphins.

Although the presence of dolphins has increased, Phay Semony, deputy director of the Fisheries Administration's Fisheries Department, is still concerned about fishing practices, which continue to threaten the dolphins' survival through the use of illegal fishing tools, such as explosives, bullets, and many other devices that the law forbids.
