A masseuse was arrested on Wednesday for her alleged involvement in the murder of a local journalist and massage parlour owner.

Kong Chanthoen, deputy chief of the major crimes unit in Kandal province, identified the suspect as Pheng Nan, 30. She was arrested at her rental house in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district.

The murder took place on Sunday evening at a guesthouse in Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district.

Mr Chanthoen said the victim was Nuon Sopheap, 58, a journalist with a local newspaper, and also a military officer with the 911 Special Forces Regiment. Additionally, he owned a massage parlour in Por Senchey district.

He added the suspect and victim were in a relationship, and she was also an employee at the massage parlour.

“She confessed she murdered him because she wanted to steal his property,” Mr Chanthoen said.

“She said her husband had been arrested for drug trafficking and jailed in Prey Sar prison. She also owed money to several people. She did not have money to support her jailed husband or pay her debts,” he said.

“She then hatched a plot to kill Mr Sopheap and steal his property.”

According to Ms Nan’s confession, she killed the victim by stabbing him repeatedly in the stomach while he was asleep after they had sex in the guesthouse room.

The victim’s family reported she stole $1,200, a platinum necklace, a gold ring, and a motorcycle, worth about $7,500.

Mr Sopheap’s body was found by a cleaner in the guesthouse where the murder took place. Another Kandal province police officer, who asked not to be named, said the suspect was preliminarily accused of premeditated murder, and faces a life sentence if convicted.

Ms Nan will be sent to Kandal Provincial Court today.

KANDAL- On the afternoon of 26 January 2018, the accused, 32 year old Pheng Nat, appeared before the provincial court who decided that she will be charged with the premeditated murder of Noun Sopheap under Article 200 of the Penal Code. She will be maintained in prison until the trial. The usual penalty for murder with premeditation is life imprisonment.

Kandal province - On 5 July 2018, 33 year old Pheng Nan Channa was sentenced at Kandal provincial court to 30 years prison, for the premeditated murder and the robbery of 58 year old Nuon Sopheap, journalist and military officer.

The suspect admitted to the acts, explaining that she needed the money because her husband is in prison and she was in debt.
After meeting the victim in a guest house, where she agreed to have sex in exchange for money, the suspect hid a knife under the pillow.
Then during the sex act, when they changed the position to that of woman on top, the woman withdrew the knife from the hiding place and stabbed her lover repeatedly in the chest until he was dead.

After killing the victim, the woman went to bathe, and then collected jewelry, money, and the victim's motorbike, which she sold at a pawn shop in Phnom Penh for $1,450.
