Married British Couple (Robert Goldie-Wells & Imogen Goldie-Wells) Commit Suicide in Sihanoukville, Cambodia Guesthouse

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

In New Zealand there are very strict laws and it is a criminal offense to report suicides, but "suspected suicide"is now ok apparently.
Unlike other countries, New Zealand has criminal laws governing what can and can't be said when it comes to suicide, or suspected suicide.
New Zealand's laws have undergone recent changes but there is no suggestion the criminal law will be scrapped anytime soon.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

The Coroner's Act 2006 restricts reporting or publicly discussing individual suicides.

Any person, including the media, cannot make public the details of a self-inflicted death.
The restriction aims to prevent copycat suicides.

A law change which came into effect on July 1 means that a death can be reported as a suspected suicide before the coroner has ruled on a case.
If the coroner's investigation finds the death to have been self-inflicted, only the deceased person's name, address, occupation, and the fact of the coroner's finding of suicide, may be published.

Edit : And in NZ it is ILLEGAL to discuss a suicide on Facebook or social media

Some were but definitely not all.

^^ Some? You mean 'most'. 'Some' would imply something like less than 50%, whereas 'most' would be more than 50% (more likely 70 - 80% +).

I argued until I was blue in the face that it was better to expose what was going on but I was shut down each time. I thought if reported correctly, it could have helped the situation but the higher powers disagreed. It was very frustrating.

I don't know statistics sorry and I also didn't know the details of each suicide but as far as I remember it was not overwhelmingly aboriginal.

HI Collette. My heart goes out to you. I have had two close friends take their lives over the years and I understand your need for answers. A friend of mine did Lifeline training once and said that the only real opportunity to talk someone out of suicide is in the actual moment, and I believe that to be the truth. You cannot hold someone's hand 24/7, so if you hold thoughts of regret or guilt, don't. It's entirely possible they made an irrational/rash decision under the influence of alcohol (or whatever) - it could be as simple as the thought of returning to the UK and their previous lives becoming overwhelming... or it could be any of a million possibilities. I hope someone does get in touch with you and share some information that helps you though. Take care.
