Best to avoid Khmer drinking places .. savage violence like this can erupt at any time .. I've seen first-hand how a trivial matter can explode into this kind of thing ..

My wife's explanation is that 'now they don't have guns so they use knives and swords instead'.

Knives and swords aside, from what I've witnessed of Khmers when a fight is about to start, the first thing to do is to look around for a rock, a brick, or a lump of 4 x 2, or anything else that can be used as a weapon.

I wonder how they would go one on one in a fist fight.

If all I lose is a hand or two, I consider it a good night in Pontoon.

there was a violent fight on the beach in serendipity earlier this year, one of the beach masseuses went over to some holidaying Khmers who had been drinking, when they asked how much they quoted them the standard $7-8, and they started kicking off with the women for trying to charge them the "Tourist" price and got quite abusive, so the woman called her brother and husband who then came down and spoke with the men, a big fight broke out which included bottles and glasses being smashed over heads and a lot of blood...

also saw a fight break out in Siem Reap last year down one of the back side streets, i was sat in the back of a tuk tuk with an american lad id made friends with and some khmer chick im friends with, hear this bang of 2 motorbikes crashing i jump out the tuk tuk to see if everyones alright but they erupt into fighting one pulls out a machete and starts swinging it the others got a brick, fight only lasts about 10-20seconds then the 2 guys with the machete jump back on their bike and drive off and the other 2 look a bit angry and distressed, i think it was possibly an attempted bike theft
