PHNOM PENH - In Cambodia, even the rich and educated bow before the mysterious dictates of magic spells and good luck ceremonies, conducted by people whose credentials reside solely in their charisma. While the poor make do with humble witch-doctors, the wealthy hire "magic-astrologers". Thus, a wealthy couple of property developers, Aing Kyheng and his wife Tith Phalla, thought nothing of paying a self-professed magician a total sum of $350,000 to conduct magic ceremonies every weekend from 2015 in order to guarantee them further wealth.

However, when the astrologer asked her clients for property titles that she needed to make magic, and then used the documents to borrow $1M from the bank, the victims finally realised that they had been scammed.

Ms Mana, a well-known astrologer, and her husband, also a property businessman, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly cheating nearly $1 million from a couple of property developers in Phnom Penh.The suspects will appear in Phnom Penh municipal court today on charges of fraud.
