You can’t overcharge an iPhone. If you’re using Apple certified equipment that is.

The real problem is all those shitty knock-off chargers & chords. The Khmer will always opt for the cheapest item.
she was quite pretty and looked older

Another fatal phone accident has occurred, when a young person was killed by a faulty phone charger after he fell asleep in Phnom Penh last night.

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): The body of 22-year-old Khay Piseth, a security guard, was found on April 18, 2021 in a rented room in Trapeang Tea village, Sangkat Trapeang Krasaing, Khan Por Sen Chey.

Prior to the incident, the young victim returned from his work as a guard, and charged the phone while he played, but then, because of fatigue and drowsiness, he fell asleep while the phone was charging and he received a fatal shock and never woke up.
The deceased was found dead on his bed the next morning. The body was handed over to the family for a traditional ceremony, but the sister of the young victim said that they did not have any money to transport the body back to their hometown for the ceremony.

This is getting ridiculous. Three deaths of healthy young people from phone chargers.

No pictures or explanation of what brand or type. No investigation into who imported them. Just a casual throw-away attitude to deaths of perfectly healthy young people due to a phone charger. Just about every young person has a phone and a charger. This is becoming an epidemic.

Is there a lockdown on phones and chargers? Testing stations for existing chargers? Closure of phone shops? Quarantine and testing of imported chargers?

Most probable (and in my opinion the foremost) cause is the absence of proper grounding. Every device that requires electricity, whether it is a hifi-set, your tv or a phone charging, needs a path to earth (or ground). If there is no ground, electricity will find another way to ground itself and in these cases it were the bodies of these unfortunate people. Counterfeit (e.g. cheaper products) may have contributed but is not the main factor, improper or lack of grounding is.

Not even that. Chargers certified with the CE mark and Australian A-tick etc meet safety standards and these are also never earthed. It's simply the cheap construction of the lowest-cost chargers that makes them vulnerable to short circuits, sending 220V into a phone which obviously can't handle it, then electrocuting the hapless person.

Your house in Australia is grounded. Rural houses (as seen in the picture) in Cambodia are not.
If your outlets and electrical box are not properly grounded, appliances and electronics you are using could end up passing excess current through you, using your body as a means to complete the path to the negatively charged ground. In other words, you could be shocked or electrocuted.
If the house is not earthed, people could get electrocuted. Without an earth connection, the safety switches will not work and an electrical fault could cause a house or appliances to become 'live' as the current flows to earth.
