No license? No problem says Interior Ministry.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

No license? No problem says Interior Ministry.

Post by Anchor Moy »

Season's greetings. I bring you good tidings: it has been officially announced that you won't need a driver's license for the next 3 months. Because...too many people want a license, it's too expensive, we didn't think of how to deal with this before the night before the law goes into effect, OMG what to do ?

Brilliant idea. No more drivers' licenses until we decide what to do. Ok. :Bravo: Damn, I'd vote for that. Stricter traffic law suspends drivers' licenses. We definitely need more anarchy.
I :OD: Cambodia, you so special.
“Fines for driving without a license will be suspended starting Friday of this week, and will not be carried out for at least three more months after the registration process starts again, to give drivers plenty of time to apply for new or renewed licenses.”

Hey CEONewshound,
Can you find the official statement in Khmer about not needing to produce your license ? I'd like to print it out to wave at the cops when I get back to Sville. I'm looking forward to breaking the news to the Sville traffic brigade. It's their favorite stunt for stopping barangs.

That would be a great Xmas present for me (and others I'm sure.) Cheers. :beer3:

Think you'll find the new traffic laws have provided them with quite a few other ways to appropriate your hard earned cash. From the initial reports it would seem there would be every chance that, while you were telling them about the license situation, they'd be loading your vehicle onto a truck for it's journey to the impound, owing to the infringements you'd unknowingly committed. :hattip:

Something to consider: Driving a vehicle without insurance cover is as illegal as driving a vehicle without a DL. In order to get an insurance contract, you need to provide a valid DL to your insurance...

Asia Insurance now also accepts DLs that have expired no longer than 3 months ago. (Good move, but anyone who forgot to extend their license in the past three months would still be stuck).

I assume the other insurance companies might have introduced a similar policy; just as with everything else in this country, I wouldn't be too sure about it...

I reckon that's only about the driving test, and the exam is staying in place.
