Lexus/Moto crash at Independence Monument :(

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

FYI the driver was Chinese in this incident according to the newspapers.

Wasn't there another incident recently where a Chinese guy hit a garbage collector?

It is not just Khmers but in this country the drivers are extremely reckless. I got smashed and needed to be taken to Bangkok however that was due to a guy fleeing and involved in a moto chase. $70K (insurance paid) and 7 months later I am almost 100%.
Yes, I seem to remember that as well.

And I agree.. There are a lot of careless drivers in Cambodia. Khmers, Chinese, Russians and barangs from several other countries have featured in the news here many times in horrific accidents.

Good to hear you came out of it ok. :thumb:

My favorite involved the drunk Barang that drove into some body of water and when the police arrived starting doing some kung fu moves/dancing.

I was hoping a video would surface but it never did.

I do that every now and then as well if I witness something that I think not be newsworthy or interesting.. but with people posting about the deaths (which in many of the cases were wrong) all over the place that results in page up and page down of negative and derogatory comments.. Maybe we should treat hearsay and unconfirmed rumors as just that?

At least until it is confirmed?

Just a suggestion of course ;)
I disagree with this. Unless there has been repeated posts on this forum regarding deaths which turn out to be inaccurate.

Not allowing discussion until something is confirmed seems overkill to me. Maybe the admins should call a local news station to confirm everything posted?
I was thinking more in the line of

"I heard that.." or "a guy I know saw.." or "last night I saw.."

And then add something like.. "This is unconfirmed.. does anyone have anymore info about this" or "We can't confirm this and there's nothing in the news about it yet."

No need to call any local news station. In this particular case the news article was posted about 25 minutes after the accident happened or so.. So to do a simple check on the Khmer news websites would take 2 minutes. After all.. none of the English newspapers in Cambodia ever post about things like this. And if they do, is usually 2-3 days after it happened.

He he.. I remember searching the web for that as well. The only time a traffic accident is funny is when only egos get hurt. But those accidents can be really funny :D

I understand. I have made posts where I stated "secondhand account" in the event it turned out to be nonsense.

I had someone tell me that the Malaysian Airlines plane was found after they read it on facebook. Of course the first thing I did was google and show them it was BS. I guess "Unconfirmed" being added to some thread titles would work unless it becomes a pain in the ass for the admins.

Maybe we should treat hearsay and unconfirmed rumors as just that?
Again, by stating in the OP that this was "taken off Facebook", I assumed that any Westerner would clearly put it the "rumor" part of their brain.

I'm also most impressed that you can tell that the liquid in the picture taken at night is in fact gasoline. Even Dexter couldn't do that shit!

My last post defending my OP...

I said it was from a friend on FACEBOOK.

You agree it could have very well looked like blood at night from his distance.

You also state that the limp/unconscious bodies were carried off.
Putting all of that together, I think he did a pretty good job reporting it, and I made it very clear it came from Facebook.

What more could I have done?

Am quite new to this techie stuff, as will probably be self-evidenced by my screwing up the quote function, but this idea I find strangely compelling. Do people do that?

Also General Mack is the most irritatingly anti-racist person I know (slavery guilt or something), so any allegations in that mould have to fail.

To my mind this is a social forum, not a television news channel (or professional interest forum) - if someone wants to post that they saw or heard something on Facebook or wherever, good luck to them. Let's all be big boys (and girls) and stop trying to over define CEO so that it perfectly matches our own preciousness. Please?

The Cambodia daily has an article up now :
Cambodia Daily wrote:SUV Fleeing Minor Crash Seriously Injures Woman
BY HAY PISEY | MAY 23, 2014
An SUV smashed into a motorbike and seriously injured a woman on Phnom Penh’s Sihanouk Boulevard early Thursday while fleeing the scene of a minor accident, police said.

According to Sem Kunthea, deputy municipal traffic police chief, a black Lexus clipped a stationary Toyota Camry at around 1 a.m. near Lucky Supermarket before smashing into a motorbike carrying three people.

“I went to a private hospital and saw the injured people there, but the suspect had run away,” Mr. Kunthea said.

“The car that caused the accident…hit a car that was parked on the road, damaging its left mirror,” he said.

“The car did not stop and continued driving until it hit a motorbike carrying two women and a man.”

Pictures of the crash posted online show a bespectacled man climbing out of the Lexus, which had flipped onto its side.

Kimchan Rachana Pichsreyneang, 18, and Keo Rattana, 19, were slightly injured, Mr. Kunthea said, while a third victim, Chea Sreyleak, was seriously injured and sent to a private hospital, he said.

Police are investigating the accident, he added.
This pretty much confirms what kohsantepheapdaily said.

And yes.. Just from looking at the picture of the motos from kohsantepheapdaily it is easy to see that it is gasoline and not blood.

But hey.. As far as a witness report goes he only posted what he actually believed happened and you just reposted that informing that it came from facebook. Nothing wrong with that.

I just suggested that we might make it clear in the post that it is not yet clear what happened. And after news articles shows up, contradicting what someone think they saw.. that we maybe do not completely ignore that information just because the reporter is Khmer.

The last few days on this forum the Thai King has been reported dead (he isn't as far as the rest of the world is concerned), an American committed suicide (he didn't die), two girls on a moto were crushed under a lexus and are completely dead - blood everywhere (it seems there was 2 girls and a boy involved in the accident and one girl, one boy is ok, one girl is seriously injured in hospital. Blood seems to have been gasoline. None of the injured are reported to have died yet)..

I think it's a great idea to post rumours, hearsay, witness reports and even gossip. As long as we post it as what it is.. and of course update the thread with facts when they surface..

I'll be fine whatever the mods choose to do as long as I can say what I think without being censored or have my posts deleted because I disagree with the mods.

(Hey! All my posts are still here.. all in tact.. even if I disagreed with a mod. :thumb: )
