What appear to be leaked conversations between social media maven—and erstwhile opposition activist—Thy Sovantha and one of Prime Minister HE’s sons show the pair discussing plans for a protest against opposition leader Kem Sokha.

The anonymous leak—posted online Sunday in a 22-minute YouTube video—is an ironic reversal of fortune for anti-opposition groups, who have had a field day with audio clips leaked in March of alleged phone conversations between deputy opposition leader Kem Sokha and an alleged mistress.

No Plans to Probe Claims That PM Promised Cash to Sovantha

The government said on Wednesday that it had no plans to look into online allegations that Prime Minister HE promised $1 million to support the activities of Thy Sovantha, a social media celebrity who rose to fame as an opposition supporter before taking a hard turn last year.

Ms. Sovantha has been at the fore of a campaign to attack acting CNRP President Kem Sokha over a series of recordings leaked online in March that allegedly exposed his extramarital relations with a 25-year-old manicurist.

While the CNRP prepares for talks with their ruling party counterparts at home, the party’s exiled president Sam Rainsy continued his offensive against Prime Minister HE over the weekend.

At a speech to supporters in France, Rainsy attacked the premier for allegedly giving social media activist Thy Sovantha $1 million to fund her campaign against the opposition, an accusation stemming from purported online conversations between the two posted on Sovantha’s Facebook page.

He contrasted the figure with the small amount of money at the centre of a “bribery” case against four staff from rights group Adhoc and an election official, which many believe is politically motivated.

Rainsy Hit With New Facebook Lawsuit as Appeal Is Heard

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy was hit with a fresh defamation lawsuit on Tuesday over claims made on Facebook that Prime Minister HE offered $1 million to a young political operative to attack the CNRP, the same day the Court of Appeal conducted a hearing over another Facebook-related conviction against the exiled politician.

Thy Sovantha, who became a social media celebrity as a CNRP supporter, but turned on the party last year, filed a defamation suit with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court demanding $250,000 in compensation over comments Mr. Rainsy made on Facebook accusing her of colluding with the prime minister...

Phnom Penh (FN), Jan 17 – Prime Minister HE has decided to file a lawsuit against Sam Rainsy for $1 million over defamation, according to the premier’s lawyer, Ky Tech.

Ky Tech told Fresh News that the lawsuit will be filed on Wednesday after the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) Leader Sam Rainsy accused the premier during his meeting with CNRP’s activists in France for bribing Thy Sovantha, a Cambodian social media star and former opposition activist, to attack CNRP.
