This is small potatoes compared to the 30kg haul last week, but as the drugs keep flooding in through the Laos border, Cambodia is awash with methamphetamine. How many kilos of meth cross the borders every day ?

Police snare another Lao drug trafficker

Stung Treng Provincial Court today charged a Lao national for allegedly smuggling nearly one kilogram of methamphetamine across the border.

Major Duong Vichetr, deputy provincial military police commander, said 43-year-old Bun Ma was arrested on Thursday in Kham Phan commune and charged today with transporting and trafficking drugs. If convicted, Mr Ma could face up to 25 years in prison.

Maj Vichetr said the suspect was arrested after crossing the border on foot at about midnight.

“He spotted our military police and fled into the forest with a big bag that he was carrying,” he said. “Officers then chased him and was able to apprehend the suspect.”

Maj Vichetr said that after inspecting the bag, officers discovered 39 packages of methamphetamine weighing a total of 793.3 grams.

Aside from the drugs, police also confiscated two phones and about $95 in Thai Baht.

The case follows one from March 3, when anti-drug police from the Interior Ministry worked with the Stung Treng Provincial anti-drugs department to arrest a Lao national for allegedly transporting nearly 30 kilograms of methamphetamine.
