I know what I would do.

When I was a teacher and had to deal with a room full of miscreant yard apes, I spared no rod and spoiled no child. Strict was merely a starting point. For physical behavior modification I used to place their hands in a desk drawer and slam it shut. I found my military past quite instructive in dealing with
recalcitrant, chemically unbalanced youth.

It wasn't long before my time when boys and girls lined up quietly in single file to enter the school, in gender labelled entryways. Teachers carried switches and could use them for correction if children were out of line or talking as they entered the halls to proceed to their classrooms.

Kids were generally well behaved because they had to watch for flying objects otherwise. I had teachers slap me, and throw chalk at me too.

Then there was church. All six of us kids sitting still and quiet for 1.5 hours would seem impossible now with today's kids, however, if you were too restless or made a peep, when your parents arm wasn't long enough, the closest adult had permission to make the proper correction, a good slap upside the head was the usual. Parents were in unison about how children should be raised, and supported each other.

Now a days of course, that's child abuse, and parents stand by in public while their kids have meltdowns, because if they were to smack them, someone would call the children's aid and have them taken away. Parents are powerless to do anything close to what might be effective, based upon our culture.

Did it work? Yes. But its a fine line, and certainly the teachers today cannot and should not be disciplining our children in this way. I too had to learn that I should never discipline my children in anger, and that not only they needed some time out for reflection, but I too needed some time to reflect and calm down before determining the corrective action required. More often, when level heads prevailed, a good discussion would help resolve thing best. I let them know it was discipline because I love them, not because I was angry.

At first, in my early days of parenting, I acted intuitively and impulsively in the manner I had learned from my parents. I was often disappointed in myself, and a few times felt I had crossed the line from correction to abuse. I then determined that if I want to teach my kids that its not ok for them to hit each other, and its not ok for me to hit my wife, then its also not ok to hit my children either.

I then disciplined in a different way, by finding their currency and what they valued that I could sanction. In this way, I hit them where it hurt. One time, my daughter slammed her door in a petulant display of rebellion. I went into her room and told her that her door represents her privacy, and that she is not entitled to it, and that if she ever was to slam her door again, I would remove it from the hinges, and she would not have a door for some time. She knew I was serious too because I had learned not to overreact, to pick my battles, but to make sure that every one I chose, to always win, and to follow through. She never slammed her door again.

I wonder what happened over the past 20 years... I'm only in my early 30s, and still remember the day I got my ass whooped by a teacher in front of my parents, and my parents whooped my ass at home for getting my ass whooped by the teacher and putting them to shame.

My 19yo nephew never got spanked since my brother is a giant pussy, and the kid is a total POS.

We went to public school. they gave the strap. It was a thick piece of leather, administered over the hands with force. They didnt need to ask our parents for permission. It was reserved for the most blatant and egregious bad behavior. If you got the strap, you got it again at home, for sure.
