Huh! I've been drinking tap water for years.

The water tank on the roof is clean. No dirt, dust or mozzie larvae. Can smell the chlorine when I fill the tank.

Phnom Penh has excellent water treatment facilities and at the point of leaving those facilities - the water is 100% drinkable. Unfortunately, after that you have to trust that the providers of pipes between you and the treatment plant have done a good job and that there's no lead, major leaks (where impurities get in as well as water getting out), etc. That's the bit nobody trusts and as such - drinking PP tap water remains a bit of a gamble.

It's been the case for the past 20 years.
PP water distribution is head and shoulders above all neighboring capitals since it was made from scratch by the Japanese if I remember correctly.
However bear in mind that most households use storage tanks, usually cooking under the sun.I doubt these are regularily sanitized as they should be.

I don't have the usual gut problems drinking in PP!. In SHV the tap water gives me the shits, even in small amounts like from the beer glass, frozen or worse, not allowed to dry from washing before putting in the fridge. Parasites and organisms in the water allowed to thrive. Freezing doesn't kill many, if you think about it freezing doesn't kill sperm and parasites are better survivors! Having mild IBS doesn't help matters. Some bars that know me, swill the glass out with a bit of that big blue, filtered water, they know I' have sensitive stomach. Some that don't, I have to explain to rinse the glass, often just look at me like I just insulted their mother. "But I cleaned the glass properly with dirty washing up water and never rinsed it with clean and If it don't hurt me then it won't hurt you" or similar is sometimes included. From my understanding, nowhere in Asia is safe to drink the water straight from the tap without boiling or filters.
