Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Who beat the jao, the Romanian or the crowd, or both?
Melvin Udall: Never, never, interrupt me, okay?

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

I don't know the answer to that question, but it might be because of ignorance? Romanian people are closely related to other west European peoples, with a language related to other Latin languages. Roma people, or gypsies if you want, came from India, and their language is related to other North Indian languages.

And they seem to be subject to just as much racism in Romania as everywhere else.

I think that people call them Gypsies out of ignorance because people used to ignorantly believe they came from Egypt, hence the 'gyp' in gypsy.

The Romanian word for gypsies is tsiganii. The root for word for Romania comes from the city of Rome. Roman soldiers colonized that area for salt.

Until I went to Bucharest in Romania this year, I would be guilty of thinking the worst of Romanians, as we see quite a few unsavory ones in UK and the Romany Gypsy name does not help. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/romany?s=t
It's true they have a large Gypsy population. I'm not sure if the Romany word connects to them. They live mostly in the countryside in certain areas but integrate in the larger town and cities alike. They have a bad rep from the rest of the Romanian population as do some Gypsies throughout the world. Mostly for scams and theft.

I used to live and work in West Berlin when the wall was still.up. Bcause I spoke good Berinerish and Romanian I had quite a few friends from both groups. My German friends would caution me about my Romanian ones, warning me that they were "oelig" or slippery, hence not trustworthy. It was true to a certain point, these were defense mechanisms development to deal with shortages and repression in the communist system they escaped from. They never tried to take advantage of me and addressed me as "cumetru" or cousin. I should add that my Romanian friends were not gypsies.
