Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

how time flies

On January 7, 1979, the city of Phnom Penh was liberated from the murderous Khmer Rouge regime, changing the course of history and charting the path to a brighter future for all Cambodians. On this anniversary of that important day, the U.S. Embassy pauses to remember the victims of the Khmer Rouge and to express our continued support for a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Cambodia.

Thanks for reminding us from Thailand that today's a public holiday. :thumb: I'd forgotten.

Be good if you could remind all the guys working on the construction sites too. They don't seem to get holidays.

Ahh that probably explains why the parcel office at the PO was closed this morning, although the main part was open.

My builders were onsite too.

Haven't been in town today to see what's happening, but the event was celebrated in Hanoi yesterday.

The Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association (VCFA) and the Liaison Committee of Former Vietnamese Experts in Cambodia hosted a ceremony in Hanoi on January 6 celebrating the 38th anniversary of the victory over the genocidal regime in Cambodia (January 7, 1979-2017). http://english.vov.vn/society/ceremony- ... 340988.vov

Picture of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument and the Independence Tower which was inaugurated in Kompong Chhnang province on January 3.

There's a big event at Koh Pich this evening, miltary displays and a huge stage. I was there earlier, loads of cute soldier women around. It's on tomorrow too.

That's interesting, I didn't realize these monuments were still being put up.

Richard - Still photos of the chap waving a handgun (the chap in the video you posted) are normally claimed to be of the events of 1975, the KR
victory over the Khmer Republic, not the Vietnamese-backed liberation of Cambodia in 1979. [See note below]

The clothing alone suggests that the video you posted is of 1975 - by 1979, everyone was in tattered and threadbare black pajamas - and in any case
there was hardly anyone in Phnom Penh other than people like the Laotian diplomats cowering away from the Embassy windows and hoping that a stray shell
fired by either the retreating KT forces or the advancing Vietnamese forces wouldn't suddenly annihilate them.

NOTE: The muscle that put the KR regime to flight was Vietnamese, but there were Khmers in the front line of the forces which liberated
Phnom Penh. A parallel would be the liberation of Paris in 1944 or the "Glorious Revolution"" of 1688, the overthrow of the House of Stuart in Great Britain.
