Interview with organiser of "private" UK repatriation flight - UK embassy response has been "pitiful" -

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Try to deflect criticisms about not helping UK nationals, justify actions (and lack of)
Mention irrelevant things that might impress (mine clearance)
Sound sympathetic about Cambodia's problems.
End on a positive, uplifting note.
Job done.
Memo to staffers - try to find a better photo next time.

In isolation, the British ambassador's predictable excuses might work on gullible or unsuspecting people. But you only need to compare the UK's response to that of other countries who did a far better job assisting their citizens - despite being faced with the same underlying problems.

Precisely, and this extends to the embassy's entire approach to their work. In comparison to embassies of other nations here, the British embassy is clearly either apathetic or incompetent. In saying this was the best they could do, it seems they are going with incompetence rather than apathy, but I suspect it was a combination of the two based on my own experiences with them.

As for mine clearing; Margret Thatcher sent the SAS to train Khmer Rouge allies in bomb making and guerrilla warfare tactics. If you piss on the floor it's your job to clean it up, you don't get any special credit for doing it.
