No more covid-19 ?
COVID-19: Last Cured Patient Discharged with Warm Congratulations from Relevant Parties
AKP Phnom Penh, May 16, 2020 --
The last patient successfully cured was discharged this morning from the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh.
The patient - a 36-year-old Cambodian woman from Banteay Meanchey province - was seen off upon her return to her hometown by H.E. Dr. Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health, H.E. Dr. Or Vandine, Secretary of State for Health, Dr. Li Ailan, Representative of World Health Organisation in Cambodia and representatives of many other relevant institutions.
The Cambodian health minister expressed his congratulations to the cured patient and attributed Cambodia's success in containing the COVID-19 spread to the timely measures taken and to the active contribution from all concerned parties, including the general public.
H.E. Dr. Mam Bunheng also reminded his compatriots to continue applying the preventive measures even though there is no new confirmed case in the past more than a month and no active case left, so as to prevent the second wave of infections.

So I guess this thread can be closed now. No more coronavirus / COVID-19 in Cambodia. Mission accomplished. And all that.

Second Wave. Coming soon to a province near you
she was quite pretty and looked older
she knew only what had been told her

Unlikely. The second wave would come from where?Stiliko wrote: Second Wave. Coming soon to a province near you
There is NO wide infection in the community. If there had been more asymptomatic cases and mild cases these people would have already spread the infection, causing at least some new serious cases. But the hospitals report NO seriously ill cases arriving at their doors.
Well over 30 days has passed since the last new case. The incubation period has passed.
The land borders are closed. There are almost no flights arriving. There is no way for this “second wave” to appear.
It is time to let businesses re-open, with appropriate social distancing restrictions and rules in place.

Then again open the borders too soon, or without proper planning, & you open the doors to a possible re-emergence.
Personally i think the corona is finished for good here. And at some point down the road we’ll understand why the old indochinese countries dodged the bullet.

Yes the sequence of restrictions easing is important. I think border opening and resumption of international flights being last.Stiliko wrote: I agree 100%. “Second wave” is the cya line the government is propagating.

I think Cambodia is escaping the worst of the pandemic because of:
- the young average age of the population here - 25 years old
- the more outside style of living rather than being cramped inside crowded offices and other venues
- very hot weather reducing the time the virus remains alive on surfaces
- good exposure to vitamin D from sunlight, which is known to help fight the virus
- the fairly prompt reaction of the government with border closures, flight bans, effective tracking and tracing of infected people, business and venue closures, and quarantining people where necessary.
- the virus may already have been through the country in November 2019 to February 2020 - it’s inconceivable that with thousands of Chinese arriving on direct flights, including from Wuhan, during that period, that the infection wasn’t spread into the Cambodian population. There are many anecdotal reports of people getting cough and fever symptoms early this year.

No new virus case prompts people to throw caution to the wind

Tourists party in Kampot province despite the government’s directive not to hold large gatherings over COVID-19.
With no new case of the coronavirus being reported for over a month, people are gathering in large numbers, including holding various types of celebrations, as life gets back to normal.
On Friday, the Ministry of Health announced that the last of the country’s 122 COVID-19 patients had recovered and was discharged from hospital.
This good news is causing concern that as lives return to normal and activities increase, there could be a resurgence of the disease.
A source in Kampot said many large gatherings are being seen in the province as people throw caution to the wind.
“Many large parties and celebrations seem to be increasing in Kampot, especially during the weekends, which seemingly are in direct defiance of government directives,” he said.
The source said for next weekend, around three big parties and celebrations are being planned at the Kenny’s Korner Kampot and GreenHouse pubs in the province.
Addressing this, Major General Mao Chanmathurith, provincial police chief, said yesterday while authorities still encourage people to practice social distancing, they cannot ban businesses from conducting activities because the owners and staff need to survive.
“Our local authorities still encourage our citizens to practice social distancing, including no large gatherings, assembling in crowds, as well as maintain good hygiene, but we cannot ban people from running businesses to support their families,” he said.

UN agency provides 1,670 dignity kits for Cambodia's response to COVID-19 pandemic
Source: Xinhua| 2020-05-19
PHNOM PENH, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Cambodia provided 1,670 dignity kits along with communication materials to assist the Interior Ministry's National Committee for Counter Tracking in fighting against COVID-19 pandemic, said its news statement released late on Monday.
The dignity kits will be distributed to vulnerable migrant returnees, particularly pregnant women and women at high risk of gender-based violence and violence against women through the national and sub-national levels, the statement said.
Approximately 100,000 migrant workers have returned to Cambodia from Thailand since March and those returnees, especially pregnant women require continued access to sexual and reproductive health services and information, it said.
Essential items that women and girls need in such an emergency, such as basic hygiene items and useful information on COVID-19 are included, the statement said.
It added that the communication and information materials included are advice for pregnant and lactating women to help protect themselves against COVID-19, reduce risk from infection, practice social distancing and tips for coping with stress at home during the pandemic.
"UNFPA is calling on governments and partners to prioritize the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls, and respond urgently to their needs," said Daniel Alemu, UNFPA acting representative to Cambodia.
