Hi All,

Apologies for the adhoc question but i would just like to hear some of the experts take on this:

In the past couple of days the worldwide situation with the virus has arguably intesified and the economic effects on Cambodia are becoming visibly daily.
The streets are emptier and there are rumours today that many restaurants, hotels and nightspots are in dire straights.
I heard from a few fellas that are invested in objects related to tourism that it’s breaking time and the next few weeks will tell if things collaps or if they can survive.
What do you think will happen here?

Same thing that's happening all over the world! We are going to ZOOM right past a worldwide recession and dive headlong into a worldwide DEPRESSION. The debt bubble has been building for years and looking for a reason to burst. The Covid19 virus wasn't a needle, but a freaking sledge hammer. If you want an idea of what the future looks like, look at the 1930's and the Great Depression. It's going to get UGLY for a long time. Buckle up, cause it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Cambodia bans entry of cruise ships through Kaom Samnor border checkpoint to stop COVID-19 spreading

PHNOM PENH, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Friday decided to ban all cruise ships from entering the country through the Kaom Samnor international checkpoint on the Cambodia-Vietnam border in a bid to prevent the spread of the COVID-19, according to an official notice.

In the notice to all cruise ship operators and agents, Mok Sideth, director-general of the General Department of Waterway and Maritime Transport, and Ports at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said the ban took effect immediately.

"The General Department of Waterway and Maritime Transport, and Ports decided to temporarily suspend entry permits for all cruise ships to the Kingdom of Cambodia through the Kaom Samnor international checkpoint from today until a new decision is made," he said.

The move came after three British tourists on board river cruise boat Viking Cruise Journey tested positive for the COVID-19.

The boat, carrying 30 tourists and 34 crew, departed My Tho Port in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam on March 5 and visited Phnom Penh on March 7 through the Kaom Samnor international checkpoint before arriving in Kampong Cham City in southeast Cambodia on March 9.

Two foreign nationals with fever quarantined, COVID-19 tests underway

Two foreign nationals, a British and a Chinese, were found exhibiting elevated temperatures of over 38 degrees.

The 32-year-old British national was said to have fled to Kampot province after being admitted to Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in the capital for further observation.

It really beggars belief that someone would do something so irresponsible - break out of hospital and go to Kampot (presumably on a bus full of passengers)

You've seen the Khmer - Soviet Hospital from the inside? Makes the NHS hospitals look like a [email protected] palace.

so now fever = quarantine?
fuck that
though of course if you have symptoms, you'd stay at home

i agree it's an extremely bad look to 'break out of quarantine', but how long were they there?

cambodia is using a 2 hour test, if khmer-times is to be believed:

Fingers crossed it is just a fever. Because, if not, authorities will have to check, amongst other places
  • Anywhere he visited in PP - Tuol Sleng etc
The hotel he stayed in in PP
Bars, restaurants he visited in PP
The bus or taxi he travelled in
Anywhere he stopped off at for toilet breaks etc
Wherever he went in Kampot - hotels, bars etc
As I say, fingers crossed that this is a false alarm. If not, then its a major problem

Kudos to the authorities for picking him up quickly in Kampot though - a very good effort that deserves praise

Kampot provincial health department director Nhea Bunthorn told Khmer Times the patient was seen in the company of two other British nationals.
“We found him along with two others so we brought the three of them to the Provincial Referral Hospital and had put them under quarantine.” he said.

if they dont have deep pockets to go on for the next 6 months.......its over for them
Even if the virus deaths ceased on the 15th, ( which wont happen) and there are NO new cases, ( another wont happen) it will take months till things return to normal

when SARS hit in 2003, ( which was not global, only hit like 24 countries) which was nothing like the financial crisis this is causing,
it took 6 months to start to recover.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
