Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

the question is what are they really up to?
Either it is plain confusion in command and control chain or there is information that we are not privy to.
"unknown unknowns" to paraphrase Rumsfeld
Whatever it is- a disrupted food supply chain coupled with lack of wages from closed businesses and movement control are going to be disastrous.
The current situation is somewhat ominous.

It’s absolutely not. But Cambodia is now starting to go through what other countries have gone through.

Texas is now busy vaccinating to herd immunity. Texas went through almost complete quarantine, but now mandatory have been restrictions lifted. Only masks and social distancing are encouraged.

Please stay safe out there.

I don't know if we're starting to go through what other countries have been going through. I simply can't believe Cambodia has been blessed to be (virtually) virus free for eleven months while the rest of the world was overwhelmed by the pandemic.
If you're right closing the borders two months after the first case, followed by restricted admission of international travelers a few months later, must be the most effective measure ever applied during a pandemic.

22 doctors at Phnom Penh’s Preah Kosamak Hospital found to be COVID-19 positive

This is a rather odd story. I seems that the list released by the PP Capital Administration contained the names of these doctors. How doctors in a Phnom Penh hospital became infected by a woman injured in a naval explosion in Sihanoukville in not clear.

Anyway, 22 doctors now infected. There must be lots more frontline staff. I hope they were prioritised for the vaccines along with all front line medical staff and not behind the precious police and army.

... 22 of the 227 cases of COVID-19 announced on Friday, 16 April, 2021 were identified as doctors at the Preah Kosamak Hospital in Phnom Penh.

In the list released by the Phnom Penh Capital Administration on Friday, stated that the infections were likely caused by a female, the wife of a Naval officer who was injured in the naval boat explosion off the coast of Sihanoukville earlier this month.

However, as of the night of April 17, the Ministry of Health has not announced the details of the 22 doctors or where they were being treated.

The identities disseminated by the Phnom Penh Capital Administration revealed that there are 227 cases comprised traders in Doeum Kor Market, Or Russey Market, Champour One Market, Kandal Market, Dumich Market, teachers, bank staff and garment factory workers.

The first AZ jab gives you 80% protection. Meta studies from your country, DOC. (GB) I guess.
80% protection against what? I'm always confused when people use percentages to talk about how effective a vaccine is. As far as I know, nobody has ever claimed that any of the current vaccines will prevent you from contracting Covid. That's not their purpose. Their aim is to stop you from having such bad symptoms that you need to go to hospital or you die from it.

So when people give a percentage to describe the effectiveness of a vaccine, what exactly do they mean? We know the Chinese vaccines are a little over 50% effective. But what does that mean? That 50% of people will get no benefit whatsoever from them but 50% will, albeit to varying degrees? And to what degree? What percentage of those go on to be hospitalised? What percentage die? Does a 50% efficacy rate mean that it gives you a fifty-fifty chance of survival if you catch Covid? Does a 50% rate mean that your symptoms would have been twice as bad had you not had the shot?

I'm not sure anyone knows these answers. It's another case of people throwing numbers into the wind that they've read online without giving them a second thought as to what they actually mean. I'm not saying the efficacy rates aren't legitimate, I'm just questioning whether people fully understand them in context.
Dude, we DO know the answers to these questions, lol. I've posted them many times.

COVID-19 vaccination process in Phnom Penh suspended due to inability of medical personnel to get to work

They've got to be joking...

The vaccination process against COVID-19 in Phnom Penh capital was suspended temporarily for three days, starting from yesterday to Monday.

Information from well-informed sources has emerged, revealing that the major cause of the suspension, though people were already in queue and waiting for their first or second shorts was a breakdown in communication and chaotic communication filtered down to those manning barricades and roadblocks.

“Many medical personnel could not make it to the hospital or the centres where they were supposed to administer the jabs to the public as they were reportedly not permitted to cross the barricades.

“I had pleaded, showed my ID, other documents and still I was turned back. I am trained to save lives and the officers are trained to protect lives. Why can’t they understand our duties? I am not the only one, there were many others and the Ministry was in a no win position but to suspend the vaccination process until clear measures are in place for us to get to the centres,” female medical staff said on condition of anonymity.

“At the decision of Prime Minister HE, the COVID-19 vaccination process in Phnom Penh capital will be postponed for three days, from April 17 to 19, 2021,” said Dr. Or Vandine, Chairwoman of the Ad-hoc Commission for COVID-19 vaccination in a voice message yesterday morning.

The process will resume on April 20, Dr Vandine, who is also Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Health said.

“Those who want to travel to Phnom Penh for the vaccination, please return home and wait for further notice,” she added.

However, she could not be reached to comment on this report.

Virtually all of South America closed their borders in the middle of March 2020. It didn't make the slightest difference and they all got slammed. Once it's in, it's in. Even some of the most restrictive lockdowns and movement restrictions in Colombia didn't do any good.

I don't know how Cambodia has managed to just carry on with life as usual, minus tourists, but they did. However, as soon as they started testing they found cases, and now a few have died and thousands languish in a living hell on Koh Pich.

I wonder how many people have died of Pneumonia and respiratory failure in the last 12 months and were given a Covid-19 test, even a post mortem one? I expect none of them. Don't ask, Don't tell.
