Information on Coronavirus / COVID-19 in Cambodia (Latest Updates December 2021)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Can’t wait for (your link to) the peer reviewed study proving that statement.
As I mentioned in the original post, you can google "How many children have died from coronavirus" to find a large number of articles discussing this very point. This is a matter of statistical analysis rather than medical study. Examples include Livescience, Statnews and many others. The Statnews article discusses the statistical breakdown of cases including the stat that 87% of identified cases occur in people over 30 years old. Trouble is the internet is swamped with articles sensationalising the disease spreading panic and fear.

The fact is that the very rare occurrences in young children are not life threatening and people under 30 years old are unlikely to become seriously ill.

COVID-19 is simply a variation of the Influenza coronavirus which has a different variant every year. What is new is the widespread panic and hysteria. The draconian measures taken in China and Korea seem to be largely ineffective and merely increase the fear. I go with the rational approach taken by the Singapore government.

P.S. There is an excellent series on Youtube by Medcram ( for episode 18) which presents objective information on the progress of the disease together with cross referencing for sources.

OK, no link to the peer reviewed study. Case closed for now for me. But keep me posted. If I find it I'll be happy to post it and admit I was wrong. For now your statement is just as like the "articles sensationalising the disease spreading panic and fear" you despise so much - a good guess at best.

I agree Medcram offer excellent updates though, but the one you refer too is over two weeks old.

it seems many here are gong on the assumption that because it is on the internet/google
it is truthful.

anyone can post anything online, take everything with a grain of salt and check the posters credentials.

Worldwide there have been NO deaths of any children below the age of 10 and deaths of anybody below the age of 30 are rare. The vast majority of deaths are amongst older people with underlying medical conditions. To verify this try googling: "How many children have died from coronavirus". It will return a large number of medical articles discussing why children are not at risk.

To describe this disease as "deadly" is misleading. It's mortality rate as measured in Korea - the most efficient and extensive operation - is 0.6%. This is roughly as deadly as influenza (15,000 deaths in USA alone for this year so far) and much less deadly than dengue fever or malaria. Whilst there could be as many as a million people infected in China, there are also 1.3 BILLION Chinese people who are not. It may be also relevant to point out that although there have been over 100,000 identified cases worldwide, at least 50,000 of these people have already fully recovered.

The current hysteria is created largely by the media whose interest is solely in sensation. They report the total number of deaths without context and they report only the cumulative number of cases without reporting the numbers of recoveries or the severity of cases.

The best advice I have seen is in government posters plastered all around Singapore:
1. Carry on business as usual
2. Wear a mask only if you are sick yourself
3. Wash hands regularly

Despite this rational advice, which is relevant at the best of times, the hysteria has also taken hold there.
It’s crazy to me how everyone is freaking out about this, going crazy with masks, spreading hysteria, yet no one gave a shit about dengue where we witnessed many people die right in our backyard. No prevention, no protection, no changes in living behavior. But yes, make sure to wear masks and drink ginger tea and eat garlic for Corona virus 🙄
Cambodia: where money can buy you absolutely anything except intelligence.

Giving rational advice as mentioned above. No trucks spraying disinfectant. No school closures (screening of children at the entrance). No arbitrary arrests. No guys going around in space suits. Providing hand washing facilities all over the country. Giving free masks to those who want them.

Emergency Hotline for International Visitors
AKP Phnom Penh, March 10, 2020 --
Image
Ministry of Tourism has proposed Immigration Department at the Ministry of Interior to notify all international tourists in Cambodia with emergency hotline – a coping measure against emerging COVID-19 threat.

The proposal was made in a recent letter signed by Tourism Secretary of State H.E. Tith Chantha to the Immigration Department highlighting 115 as the emergency hotline number.

The effort was seen as another mechanism to make Cambodia a safer tourist destination and further build confidence among those visiting the country.

"You may have been exposed to an infectious disease before arriving in Cambodia."

Cambodia is still an official 'infectious disease free country'.
