Preah Sihanouk plans outdoor street food court to boost tourism
Chea Vanyuth / Khmer Times

Preah Sihnouk provincial authorities plan to establish the province’s first ever outdoor street food court, a cluster of stalls adhering to food safety standards serving Khmer cuisine, as a new tourist attraction.

The street food corner will be established in the public park, in Commune 2 of Sihanoukville, according to a recent meeting chaired by Khuoch Chamroeun, provincial governor.

The construction of the street food corner will be shared by the provincial Department of Tourism and Department of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction.

Chamroeun said it will not only attract more tourists but also provide a place for large groups to go for guaranteed food safety standards.

As planned, the street food corner will feature food stalls, decorations, parking and signage. The standard of each food stall will be assessed properly by the Ministry of Tourism.

Director of the provincial Tourism Department Taing Sochetkrisna said that street food is a category in the ministry’s annual clean city competition.

Nine public toilet blocks are being constructed at strategic locations along the beaches in Sihanoukville as part of making the city more attractive to tourists.

Kheang Phearum, Preah Sihanouk provincial spokesman said yesterday the toilets are being built along O’chheuteal beach, Otres Beach and Chum Teav Mao Beach.

“With Preah Sihanouk province being one of the country’s most attractive tourist destinations, the building of the public toilets will be an added advantage. Furthermore, the use of these public toilets will be free-of-charge,” he added.

He said the public toilet facilities will be ready before Khmer New Year, that is in April, one of the longest holidays in Cambodia.

Preah Sihanouk province roads done in March
Khouth Sophak Chakrya | Publication date 11 February 2021 | 21:22 ICT

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Hall spokesman Kheang Phearom announced on February 11 that the construction of 34 roads throughout the province is scheduled to be finished in mid-March and will be formally inaugurated before the Khmer New Year holiday in April.

He explained that all concrete had already been laid, and the laying of asphalt was 60 per cent complete. Installation of traffic lights and road signs has been competed while the installation of CCTV and painting of traffic lanes and other road markings are about half finished.

“All crews are now accelerating their pace and working around the clock to finish the remaining tasks by March 15 in order for their inauguration to be formally held before the upcoming Khmer New Year,” he said.
