So HE will open the fixing of roadworks that the guest investors destroyed to show that they are welcome to do whatever they want as long as his crew are advantaged.

Since Prime Minister HE announced a ban on online gambling, tens of thousands of Chinese nationals have left Sihanoukville on Cambodia’s coast. But the road to rebuilding seems a long one indeed

WHY WE WROTE THIS: Because unsustainable development in Sihanoukville is casting a long shadow across Cambodia.

The minibus packed with Russian tourists belches clouds of black smoke as it bounces along the bumpy pothole-riddled roads of Sihanoukville.

The visitors, who are making their way to the ferry that will take them to Koh Rong Samloem, one of the two nearby islands that cater to Western tourists, remain quiet as they pass mountains of rubbish and construction debris.

With families living amidst the refuse, it is almost a parallel world to the hundreds of gleaming Chinese-owned casinos that dot the landscape. In many ways, Sihanoukville, once the seaside jewel of Cambodia, resembles a war zone. The buildings are all hollow shells and debris is everywhere.

What this latest busload of visitors have entered is a giant construction zone with no end in sight and no real rhyme or reason for the building. Dan Davies, director of property management at international real estate firm CBRE in Phnom Penh, said that much of the development was being done by Chinese speculators just looking to sell the land on to the next investor.

“Who is going to live in these buildings?” he asks...

That SEA Globe article ^^ (link immediately above) is the best report I have yet read about Sihanoukville.
Nothing new to CEO readers, but it sums it all up really well.

Unfortunately, i fear the dire predictions are probably true - the "clean up" will be ineffective, and even if it was properly conducted - the physical attractions will take a long long time to recover.

(PS, but it was a bit euro-centric. Not much there about the huge number of Cambodian tourists that flocked there. For most it was their first ever experience of a beach resort town. It was theirs, and they loved it.
That is the angle that is rarely talked about, even on CEO )

The new route 4 pp to shv will be funded via road tolls so the people will end up paying for that too

Not that great to be honest. Like you say, why it's only from view of westener who had failed business there? How about local point of view? They haven't even tried to get comment from the local officials. Half of the article is just hearsay.

Sihanoukville - Some roads in Sihanoukville have stretches that are permanently covered with stagnant water, because the water cannot drain off. Some areas of town are full of these no-go streets of dirty water, mud and trash. The air smells bad and the rats do not even hide.
This is in district 4, Sihanoukville. It has not been raining.
